READING, WRITING
Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says the Agricultural Revolution (12K BC - 8K BC) was accompanied by a Religious Revolution.
NOTE: Why he calls it a "revolution" is unclear - if the Sapiens of the time had had a prior religion, then they'd have "revolted" against it. No. Rather, it should be called a "birth" or at least an "evolution" from some prior belief system.
Then Harari points out that Sapiens hunted sheep, but that did not mean that Sapiens were more intelligent than sheep. Similarly, tigers hunted Sapiens, but that did not mean that tigers were more intelligent than Sapiens. Farmers sought to control sheep, but they were limited: they could not determine if and when sheep would reproduce, or contract a disease and die off.
Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins. He says I will be tempted to begin writing as soon as an idea hits me. DON'T DO IT, he says. I should first get buy-in from a publisher that she or he will accept my piece. THEN begin writing. It seems backward, but with the often picky editors waiting, red pen in hand, to reject my writing most of the time..... it will save MUCHO time if I get buy-in first.
Find out the theme of a magazine's issue, and submit the idea for a piece FOR THAT ISSUE. If the editor shows interest, THEN begin writing. Makes sense.
Read for 1+ page in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls that as he moved closer to the Democratic ticket nomination, his life with Secret Service detail became more and more restrictive. He could no longer enter a building through the front door.
MY NOTE: He says he'd have to enter through the back door - but he did not relate that to how Blacks USED TO BE treated in the USA - they'd be forced to enter from the rear of a building simply because they were Black. And now he's doing the same, but for a very different reason. I wonder if he ever recognized that fact, and possibly felt bad for his earlier Black relatives and friends who were so mistreated.
Read for 1+ page in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughn-Lee. He says that it's not what, nor how much we give, but rather the spirit in which it is given. We need to leave behind our selfish motivations, and give to the work of our Creator. We must be blind to our limitations, and rely on the love of our Creator, who will provide for us what we need to be able to give.
