Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that during the 1430s, Zhang He, the Chinese explorer, set out to explore (not to conquer) distant lands, and he eventually reached the eastern shores of Africa.  He took 300 ships and thousands of crew members.  But his explorations were cut off by a new regime/dynasty? in Bejing.  By contrast, Columbus set sail in 1492 to discover AND to conquer new unexplored lands.  Not long later, a Spanish conquerer Hernain Cortes, heard of the Aztec Empire in Central Mexico, and reduced it to ruins, declaring all of "Mexico" as a land conquered for the King of Spain.
