READING, WRITING

Read for 40 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls some last days of the life of Teddy Kennedy, who fiercely sought to bring reasonable health care to all Americans; he said to BO: "This is the moment, Mr. President. Don't let it slip away."

Read for 40 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says "crossing the Rubicon" for humankind was when (we'll never know exactly when) people began to build nests, forage for food, and fight to the death to defend their nest. Words were not just the connection between a sound and an object; they were also the agreed upon idea/definition that the group gave them.

Read for 40 seconds in SHAMELESS by Brian Tyler Cohen. He says GOP leaders did what Trump taught them: if you lose, smash your way back until you've "won." (NOTE: in this scenario, EVERYone loses)

Read for 40 seconds in HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain. For fun.

    READING, WRITING

Read for 40 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls Ted Kennedy's gift of a dog - Bo - who brought so much happiness to the Obamas. It was shortly before Ted's bout with a brain tumor would end.

Read for 40 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says our "ultrasocietal evolution" happened when we crossed a Rubicon: groups began to practice intra cooperation (you do this, I'll do that, etc.) and eventually either clashed or cooperated with other groups. Probably this process took several hundred thousand years. And then they began to seriously clash or cooperate with other groups.
NOTE: All this seems to be what Haidt, and others THINK happened. Unless I missed some references, he's just saying what had to happen at some point for us to be where we are today.

Read for 40 seconds in SHAMELESS by Brian Tyler Cohen. He says The SCOTUS & The GOP in Congress got Roe v Wade overturned in 2022, and promptly began attacking individual states, in spite of their "position" that States should resolved the issue individually. Shamelessness abounds at the GOP!!!

Today I begin taking a 3rd prescription drug, PRADAXA.  It's a blood thinner, designed to thin my blood a bit since my atrial fibrillation (age related) COULD POSSIBLY cause a blood clot, which COULD POSSIBLY travel to my brain, and COULD POSSIBLY cause a stroke.

    *sigh*

My Uncle Ken had a stroke which left him partially paralyzed (I think).  I'm also pretty sure my Grandmother Borg had a stroke.  It might be genetic - I don't know for sure.  But anyway, I'm grateful for modern medicine, and Medicare, and Kaiser Permanente..... it's all preventive at this point.

    *******************************

I am laughably pathetic.  No, I'm not.  But the phrase came to me as I let out a small chuckle, while thinking about my achievement for today:  25% of what I'd ideally do.  And now, I have an extra 15 minutes before it's time to get ready.  Hurry, then relax.  THAT'S what's laughable.  And only doing 25% - THAT'S what's pathetic.

But no, I'm not laughably pathetic.  I just figured out how to say it IF I were.  I'm not.  I've done what the pilot said I should do:  "at least make your bed."  I did that, and then some.  So that's laudable.  ("pat, pat" -- that's me patting myself on my back).  I deserve to think better of myself than I sometimes do.  I'm an achiever.  Maybe I'll get back to being a "high achiever" (that's a relative description, of course).  For now, I am an achiever.

My writing is about me.  Every writer's writing is always about the writer.  How could it not be?  Ultimately?  It is.

Jabez drank long and deep of the bubbling stream's clear, cooling life-giving water.  It's the best drink there is, he thought, as he wiped his beard with his yellow bandanna.

OH GOOD LORD.  That's merely IMITATIVE writing.  Re-reading it brought up a deep chuckle.

"I did my MATUTINAL routine at seven o'clock."  (no need for "AM" - that would be redundant.)

    Observations about my life:

Since 2-3 grade, when I learned to read, I found reading to be a chore.  I've seldom found much pleasure in it.  I enjoy some books (e.g., The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn), and find other books (e.g., The Righteous Mind) to be a chore.
I'm always wondering why they wrote it the way they did, and if what they wrote is still valid today, and why they chose certain words & phrases, and who else has read this book, and what they thought of it, and what *I* think of it, and whether I'll share it with my friends, or buy a copy for my children....... all that in stead of just reading it & absorbing the messages therein.

LOL.  What should I do now about reading?  I'll continue plowing through the books I'd like to read (whether due to the style of the author, the relative importance of the content, or the recommendations of friends - e.g., David T, George M, Joseph P, and others)

But today, my routine was interrupted by an annoying leak in the kitchen ceiling.  I'm waiting for Chad to wake up so we can find out what to do about it.

Eric/Rick Lefrandt called.  His plan is to say goodbye to this world on May 26, 2026 at 10:30 AM

I don't know what to "say" or think.  Maybe I could write something, but it doesn't seem to be "in me" to write anything.  To Eric.  To Arno.

Eric told me just now that Arno is having a really emotionally difficult time.
Eric asked me NOT to contact Pascale until after July.
Eric told me that Arno will stay in the same house.
Eric told me that there will be renovations to the house soon.
I told Eric that Joe was really happy to get the Tabernacle Choir records (set of 5 LP vinyl records in original packaging)
I told Eric I didn't know what to say or do, except to tell him that I love him, and that I will keep him in my heart, and cherish all the memories we've had.
Eric told me that it's all been good.

Writing during writing time with George:

    ecriture automatique?  sais pas.
So, now is the time to be honest and say what we want, and what we think, and to not be afraid of how our talk might be received by whoever we're talking to.
BUT, "think before you speak."  Good advice.
    BUT, "flow."  (Frank Lee Wright)
BUT, if you follow the "instructions of life, you'll have greater success."  Or at least in some ways, you will.  The instructions for living are given along the road of life.
HA!  What do I know?  Not much.
I want to watch that movie again - Faulkham Hall (?)
