READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that in the early American societies, "liberty" did not mean freedom for slaves, or the poor.  Rather, it meant that the government could not confiscate a citizen's private property, or tell him (not her) what to do with it.  There was no (or not much) thought given to the inequality among races or wealthy/poor people.

That's interesting.  It's an illustration of the anachronisms we now contemplate - and would do well to remember that as society evolves, we must not apply our thinking & situations of today, to the 1760s, or even to the 1960s.  For example, a woman marrying a man today is free/at liberty to keep her maiden name, but such was considered quite fringe in the 1960s, and I'd guess completely unheard of in the 1760s.

I change, we change.

*******************

Yesterday started out on a high, but was soon brought down by a) David's news that the money call will not come until early January, and b) my talk with Joe about his financial dire straits & his shakey marriage.

I feel a great sense of foreboding about both.

HOWEVER.........

This morning, I woke and listened to the latest Infants On Thrones podcast:  An interview with Alan Cohen (not born Jewish, but adopted Judeaism in his teen years, and later gave it up; he actually sounds to me like many New York Jews, but anyway....).  He wrote a book "A Course in Miracles, Made Easy" (GOD why can't my brain recall things of merely an hour or two ago????  NOTE:  I DID recall the title after having written the rest of today's post, and I entered it above.  There IS hope, after all!)  He reminded me, in his discussions with the IOT host, that there is nothing but love or fear, and that some think that fear is merely love with an ugly mask.

Well, that reminded me of David, to whom I wrote 2 texts this morning, thanking him for bearing with me as I "unloaded" on him about my doom and gloom - mostly financial, both for me and for Joe.

And I thought that I could possibly write a biography of David and title it "The Patient Doctor."  It's likely already been thought of, and maybe even already used as a title for something.  But I claim it as my original thought.

Now, if I can just add the WRITING part........

(In due time.)

READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He asks how did Sapiens organize themselves into massive cooperation networks?  After all, there was a gap between the biological capacity of the human brain, and the extensive need for managing data.

He says that the only way Sapiens could have "bridged the gap" between the capacity of the human brain, and the need to track, record and retrieve pertinent data, was to IMAGINE ORDERS and to DEVISE SCRIPTS.

These were initially created by the haves; the have nots became victims of the imaginations and devisings of the haves.

So now Harari has prepped himself to discuss class distinction, and he immediately attacks American "equality" as not being fair at all, however much the founders believed that all men (not women or negroes) were created equal.

********************

I spent the last two days binge-watching some TV series ("The Crown" and "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"), which filled the time between the last "D-DAY Promise" and the one coming up this week.

But it has colored my thinking and writing.  Two distinct cultures are described:  The evolution of the British one (largely in the 20th century under Elizabeth II), and the painful Jewish comedy of New York in the 50s and 60s.

I've adopted some of the understanding therein.

READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the process of development of Sapiens since the Agricultural Revolution (it began between 12K BC and 8K BC) somehow eventually included the establishment of a world-wide system of numbers (Arabic), which then gave way to recording history in numbers and letters.  This went on for a while until they needed a way to preserve information far beyond the capacity of the Sapien brain:  computers did it, and eventually they were reduced to "1" and "0" so as to simplify and standardize the system for world-wide use.

And now, Harari says, we Sapiens (unbeknownst to most) are moving to artificial intelligence (still based on "1" and "0"), which, it is speculated, could become superior to the Sapien brain, and wipe it out.

Hmmm.  Not a new idea, but certainly troubling and intriguing, if it's possible.

This all leads me to wonder if there isn't some superior being(s) who would not allow the Sapiens of the Earth to be wiped out by AI Computers and the like.  I also have wondered if there weren't some superior race watching us, and ensuring that we Sapiens may continue to dwell in relative peace and safety despite global warming, wars, natural disasters, etc.

A "natural disaster" is not so much a "disaster" if it does not affect Sapiens, no?

As is the "pattern" with my "unpatterned life" (meaning, I might be thinking about natural disasters and such, when of a sudden, I hear a tone on my phone, signaling the receipt of a message.  Since I'm hoping for contact with family and close friends this Sunday morning, I immediately drop my thread about natural disasters, and see a transmission of a wonderful Christmas musical message: "O Holy Night" performed by the Kings Singers and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  It was forwarded to me on FaceBook by Eric LeFrandt.

As I listened, my eyes moistened, and I wondered why.  I thought that the tears were a blessing, and that I would like to share this with family & close friends.  But would it be appropriate for Joe & Chrissy, who are nudging up to atheism?  A few minutes later, I looked at the 6 soloists and noted that they were the Kings Singers.  I wondered who they were - descendants of the Mormon King family?  I imagined the tenor soloist being a Mormon missionary.

But to my satisfaction, I researched the "King Singers" and found that they were formed recently (70s or 80s?) in Cambridge, England.  The "King" means the King of England, and not the Mormon King family.

Whew!  Now I felt better about sharing the emotional performance with Joe and Chrissy.  On FaceBook, you can forward such to other FaceBook people, and I did so to my family.

I'd love to also share it with David, George, and a few others.  It's about Christ, and I'm not at all sure he existed, or if he DID, that he did what the Bible says he did.  I certainly know that the modern-day religionists are not at all reliable in their telling of the Christ tale.

But "O Holy Night" still gives me pause, and tears in my eyes.

The MEN of The Kings Singers, and the MEN of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir were highlighted in the YouTube video.

Perhaps I was teary-eyed because I could identify with those men.

READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that there is a universal language beyond "script" - it's NUMBERS.  We, the people of the Earth, use numbers (Arabic ones) to express almost everything we record.  This makes sense to me.

After having a prolonged period of using numbers to express almost everything, we now have reduced even that numbering system to a computerized binary system of 0 & 1.  This simplifies, but also complicates the recording process.  Were it not for the "lightning speed" at which this computer system operates, we would likely still be using the Arabic numbers system.

***************

Although so far, today has not been "David Day" as was thought possible yesterday...... I DID have a quite enjoyable experience waking up in my new bed this morning:

a.  I luxuriated on my "medium Karina mattress" and under my down comforter, accented by my down filled pillows.  I LOVE the feeling!  And today I noticed that my back pain is dissipating with each passing day.
b.  I received a call from my dear Lisa, who is like me in that she has both good and bad days; today was a good one for her, too.  She was exuberant about Christmas plans, and I, typically, said, "Whatever you'd like to do, I'll do."  I feel quite blessed by having 2 children (4), and 7 grandchildren.
c.  I checked my email, and there were THREE from David, about Paris' demerdage, the Winder Solstice, and the dire economic status of our country/world.  I will read them during the course of my Saturday morning.

Why is my writing so "formal" right now?  I suppose it could have something to do with binge-watching "The Crown" - all about British Royalty in the current era.  I feel the need to no only express my ideas grammatically accurately, but also to do so with a British flair, or some such.

My *sigh* today is a happier one.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He presents a formula for calculating i , the acceleration of mass under the influence of gravity, according to the theory of relativity.  He says that most human beings cannot readily comprehend the concepts of the formula, and so pass it by.

I read through the formula and noted that there were several "groupings" - e.g., ( ), {}, etc, but it's been so long since I've focused on algebraic formulas and/or calculus, I am not clear which functions take priority over others, as laid out in Harari's illustration.

But this is certainly one of the concepts Harari presents with which I have no problem agreeing.

*****************

Well, today's the last day of the "next week" that David/Michael told me would be the beginning of the cash flow into David's account.  And still nothing.

I suppose I'll have to move on now.

It's so maddening and saddening and disappointing.

I can't figure out what's really going on.  I'm too far removed from the people who are in control.  And that makes it all the more frustrating.

It seems as if 5.5 years is plenty long enough to wait for the ship to come in.  I know David, and so I don't imagine that he is lying, or is even deceived.

I just can't figure this out.

But now, I'm out of money (unless I tap further into my 401K retirement money, or unless I sell my house).  And so I'll be considering what work I might find over this weekend, and begin the process of looking on Monday morning.

*sigh*

BIG *sigh*

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that at some time, humans stopped thinking like humans, and started thinking like bookkeepers and accountants, so that they could keep things organized and retrieve data as needed.

Also "at some time" humans in Arabia invaded India, and found that they had developed a numerical system of base 10 (0-9 symbols); the Arabs adopted it and now take credit for being the "first mathematical system."  Soon, symbols for mathematical calculations were added, forming the basis for our mathematical system today.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO UPSET that Joe did not get the job he interviewed for.  He is being "strong" but I know it "stings" him more than he's letting on.  I wish some day things would turn for him - things that could allow him to enjoy his life more completely.

And for me, too.  I wish today were the day David calls.  But probably not.

(*sigh*)  I was riding so high this morning, and now I'm already "shot down."

"When will I be loved?"  same feeling, but right now, it's more "When will I be rich?"

  6. push-ups 35 + 30 + 5 = 70  (this was better than Monday, when I did 35 + 26 + 9 = 70)

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the brain tracks information by "free association" (example:  "how did we start thinking about X?  - if you can trace your free association thoughts back, you might remember how you "got started" thinking about X -  it was likely a chain of thoughts that were associated "linearly" with each other).

But this doesn't work for retrieval.  We must establish a "drawer" for certain documents, and another "drawer" for other documents.  Even this is not efficient when a particular document might qualify for 2 different drawers.  And then, we must establish a time sequence for each drawer so we can more readily retrieve a document filed "Y years ago," or "today's filings."

This issue is real for me when it comes to photographs:  subject?  or date?  or place?  or trip?  Years ago, I decided to establish a file for each year, and I merely put the photos taken during those years in the corresponding yearly files.  But that does not account for photographs larger than the file folders, or for slides, and now certainly not for digital photos on my phone or computer.

Help!

Maybe after I leave the planet, someone will be able to make sense of all of them.  Or maybe they'll just throw them out.

Bill Laursen, my friend of 45+ years, told me the other day that he's begun throwing away all his old photographs that he says no one will care about.  I told him I dasn't do that, since my kids or grandkids might very well want to see them.  So I will keep mine.  For now.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the reason Sumerian script (along with Egyptian, Asian & others) survived is that they developed a way of cataloging and retreival of data.  Harari then gives a recently-discovered account of a student who lived in Mesopotamia, and who was punished by caning for various infractions, among which were speaking a different language, and leaving without permission.

I honestly don't know how this plays into the development of written languages, and Harari leaves it to me to "apply" the lesson.  I suppose it illustrates how severe discipline was thought to help students learn, even in circa 2000 BC.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that in the earliest days of writing/recording data, there were systemic problems:  for example, a dispute could arise about the disposition of some property which might have been recorded on clay tablets years earlier.

There was no easy way to retrieve the tablet, or to guarantee that it was still legible, or that another transaction in subsequent times could have been generated..... a "librarian" of those times would not be a happy person.

Today, computers make such problems minimal.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that as writing developed, problems occured:  how to keep track of data that is beyond the brain's ability to recall.  Our brains are, as he says "amazing" in their ability to recall certain things.

Note:  He, a Sapien with a brain, considers the human brain's capacity to recall things "amazing."  I am aware that for some other Sapiens, and likely for many other species, this ability would not necessarily be considered "amazing."  IOW, the person thinking something is "amazing" could very well be programmed/created to think so.  And therefore, brains and sunsets are possibly merely acting "ho-hum" when considered from an outside perspective.

But still, I think it IS amazing that our brains can recall some things, but not others.  In general.  At any rate, Sapiens developed a means to record the data, and that's what Harari will explore next.  I think.

***************

I have a new bed, hopefully WITHOUT any bedbugs in or around it.  And it's Sunday, the day of rest.  Still, I have a goal to reach 175 by 1/31/20, so I am not resting 100%.  I feel the need of a 1" foam mattress pad, and will explore getting one tomorrow.

Tomorrow.  How can I live through today?  I might be, as Annie says, "...only a day away..." from my new life with David & his Deal.  I sure do hope so - I've waited long enough.

IF there is no call, what will I do?  Go shopping (gas, Costco, TJs, Ralphs).  Get a haircut?  (maybe not).

But TODAY, I will relax and enjoy my new bed.

READING, WRITING

NOTE:  during my "off" time of the last 14 days or so, I didn't read in SAPIENS; but I DID, however, listen to audible book - "The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe." which filled my drive time quite well; I will listen to it again.

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the early Sumerian writings (3KBC to 2.5KBC) gradually developed additional signs and symbols, and evolved into "cuneiform," which was used by kings to issue decrees, et .  The Egyptians (roughly the same time frame) developed hieroglyphics.  A bit later, Asian cultures developed theirs (1200BC), and still later, South American's developed theirs (1000-500BC).

By   500BC, every culture was writing things down.

We've come a long way since those days - now, everything is typed into an electronic/digital image or document.

TODOs:
