READING, WRITING
Read for 70+ seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He asks, "Was James Cook expedition to Australia (Aborigines), New Zealand (Maoris) and Tasmania a) a scientific expedition or b) an imperialistic expedition?" He says it was both, and eventually was punctuated by religious types who were well-meaning but not sympathetic to the culture/language/beliefs of the native populations. Tasmanians has lived & thrived for 1000 years in isolation, but the Europeans wiped them out, and then studied their remains, which they put into museums.
Disgusting! And yet who can blame the imperialists for teaching "savages" modern ways of living?
Read for 70+ seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls the transition from being President-elect to being President, and a lot of his focus shifting from his family to his job; the process was bumpy here and there, but also exciting, as he tried to lead his new team into actually doing what he'd promised as a candidate.
Read for 70+ seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee. He says the joining of the "inner" and the "outer" is what is going on right now. It is essential to produce the "child" of our age. Before, knowledge & information could only trickle through. But now, they're GUSHING OUT!
And, Vaughan-Lee adds, it is only now that we can address "WHO WE ARE AND WHY WE ARE HERE."
I'm now MUCH MORE MOTIVATED to read & assimilate Vaughan-Lee's message, since that is a question I have asked myself about myself - for my whole life!! Can't wait to read more.
Read for 70+ seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says that human beings, and animals in general, approach living with the simple question: Approach, or Avoid. Animals do this without the need for rational thinking; human beings will think about it. But they won't do so initially; the ELEPHANT response process is less rational, more emotional.
Post hoc: means describing an event which follows another event, and could (or could not) be the result of, or caused by the first event.
Ad hoc: means when necessary, or needed; created for a particular purpose.
Read for 70+ seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He says his group of 200 prisoners were eventually transferred from Auschwitz to Dachau, by train. The train passed through Vienna, his hometown, where he was born & raised. It even passed the street he'd lived on. He tried to look through the small barred peephole of the box car, to see the street, but others refused to let him, saying that if he truly had been raised there, "he'd seen enough."
I'm moved by the suffering of these people, and I'm glad we got rid of Hitler and his ilk. I'm also sharing Frankl's love for Vienna, where I lived myself for 4 years. I'm imagining such a trip as his, in a filthy crowded train car, stopping in front of my house, and longing, yearning to go back to my childhood life on Turkenschanzstrasse, Wien XVIII. It's impossible to imagine.
We've done a terrible thing to Jews.
Read for 1+ pages in ULYSSES by James Joyce.___x
