Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says his first and subsequent summits taught him that the leaders of nations (notably the BRICS leaders) were not interested in participating in a global effort to promote and preserve democracy; they chose rather to conduct bilateral business with other countries when they were needed.  BO focused more on Russia's Medvedev (Putin's lackey president) to respond to Putin's invasion of Georgia, and his general belligerence with regard to international post-war norms, nuclear agreements, etc.

He reviews his impressions of the "BRICS" nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), focusing on China: They are the emerging world dominating nation, however, they seemed to have little interest in solving the international financial crisis facing BO & America; they did, however, have a plan similar to BO's Recovery Plan.

He explores the possibilities of the evolution of Sapiens from hunter-gatherers (egalitarianism, and no hierarchy) to agricultural societies (lots of hierarchy, private property, and larger groups). He asks if humans originally had the egalitarianism "sharing" or "Fairness" genes, and then evolved into today's "boss/employee" unfair distribution. We did that, obviously. But what of that earlier approach to caring and sharing? Is it still with us? JH introduces a 6th moral foundation, because, based on his research, there seem to be 2 kinds of Fairness:

1) The desire for equality is MORE related to the psychology of liberty and oppression (I.e., JH's 6th foundation)
2) The desire for equality is LESS related to the psychology of reciprocity and exchange.

READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says meeting Continental Europe's (at the time) most powerful leaders (Germany's Angela Merkle, and France's Nicolas Sarkoszy) taught him two significant personalities who'd risen to leadership in their respective countries:  Merkel was stolid and wary of emotional outbursts, having grown up in East Berlin and having earned a PHD in chemistry.  She had a bright face with large blue eyes.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says that he wrote to try to convince liberals to espouse the moral foundations of the Right (authority, loyalty, Sanctity) in their politics so as to win greater favor & chance at the presidency & majority of the government.  He reasoned that espousing merely Care and Fairness was not enough to win.  He also explains America's unofficial motto, e pluribus unum (of many, one), and further says pluribus (many), and unum (nation) are what liberals focus on.  However, how can that happen if you don't acknowledge others who approach life (and living and community and nation) with a more balanced morality, including all of Fairness, Care, Authority, Sanctity and Loyalty?  You can't.  BUT..... I note that the next section is titled, "What did I miss?" - so we'll find out next time.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  His summarizer continues:  Frankl lived into his 90s, continuing to lecture all over the world, and receiving accolades from major Western universities, writing many books, and heading up the "Department of Logotherapy" (?) in Vienna.
As a reminder, LOGOTHERAPY:  
Logotherapy, developed by Viktor Frankl, is a type of existential therapy focused on finding meaning in life as the primary human motivator, helping people discover purpose even in suffering to overcome challenges like anxietydepression, and meaninglessness (existential vacuum). It's based on the idea that we have the freedom to choose our attitude and can find meaning through meaningful work, love/relationships, and courage in unavoidable suffering, making it the "third Viennese school of psychology" after Freud and Adler.
