READING, WRITING
Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says money DOES buy happiness ("subjective well-being"), but only to a point. The same amount of money to a welfare mother of 4 which buys her happiness, would not make much difference to a billionaire.
Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He says his team (Denis) prepared him on how to do a proper military salute. So he was prepared for that. But was he, he asked himself, prepared for what a President must do/think about while in office? Here's his list:
- Be prepared for everything
- Keep Americans safe
- Threat of Russian nuclear attack
- Mistaken (due to a software glitch) launch of a nuclear warhead
- A fanatic blowing himself up on a subway
- The government tapping into Americans' email accounts
- Foreign oil disruptions leading to gas shortages
- Global warming/climate change leading to rising oceans and planet frying
- Illegal immigration
- Pandemic disease in poverty sectors, possibly originating in a poor country overseas
(whew!)
Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says the "Care trigger" is almost always universal, no matter whose child you're looking at (his son sleeping with 2 stuffed monkeys), and no matter what animal is harmed (a baby seal being beaten with a bat).
Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He cites a case study in which a writer with writer's cramp was "healed" by doing the opposite of what he was trying to do; he was able to "open up" the "opposite side" of his professional work, thus freeing the "good side" (meaning he was able to resume his normal work).
