Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  With the arrival of modern medicine at now what is practically unstoppable break-neck speed, YH asks many important questions of our species:  the generation of new species, the ethical conundrums of the harnessing of DNA, the decisions about what information should remain private (e.g., will insurance companies demand a DNA scan & set premiums accordingly?), etc.

NOTE:  This book was published circa 2014, so it's 11 years old now.  I wonder what changes have since taken place.


Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He write a powerful summary illustrating the "dual vision" he had - somewhat new for a US President, and certainly controversial:
*)  USA is endeared by people around the world for the soft power/humanitarian presence.
*)  USA is blamed for almost every negative aspect of living in other countries (befouling countrysides by US companies, etc.)

So, BO had a new dilemma as a Black President with a Muslim name:  maintain strong USA leadership (including military strength) while giving equal energy to soft power around the world.

Looking back, I got up early Saturday (0329) and did minimal things, but right now, I don't remember exactly what I did.  I THINK I did the following:


I had to leave around 7AM, to arrive at Eli's baseball game in Santa Ana by 8:30 AM, which I did.


I woke up at 5AM, as usual, and did the 1st half of my exercise routine.  I didn't do any piano.  By 6:30, I had prepped everything for 1 night in San Clemente, followed by a visit to Dr. Pruitt on the way back home Sunday morning.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says that there is an "Authority/subversion Foundation" which is reflected in how we treat each other:  Kids don't say "f you" to their parents; doctors are usually referred to as "Doctor Smith;"  English uses "you" for everyone, but generally reserves using a first name for familiar people; French & German, etc al, have 2 forms (Vous, tu).


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says (he's almost done with this book), and it bears repeating here, typing it, internalizing it:

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He begins at this point in his book to introduce the ideals of America, how they're subject to terrorism (9-11), and how they're appreciated by less-fortunate peoples (USAID).


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says not to confuse POWER and AUTHORITY.  I need to re-read this passage iot understand it better.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says (in the postscript written in 1984)  that there is a "tragic triad" (1) pain, 2) guilt, and 3) death), in spite of which he advocates "the case for tragic optimism."  This, he says, involves 1)  getting something positive from experiencing pain, 2) letting go of guilt as we derive from it a way to live better, and 3) not dying but living and being responsible for our decisions in life.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says modern science has succeeded in enabling patients with "locked-in syndrome" (cannot move anything except eyes) to communicate more freely.  Harari speculates that such procedures could be extended to healthy people who want to share their brains, including emotions, memories, etc.... with another human.  Harari says this being (cyborg) would be like no other.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says his team was in general made up of "Type A"s, and Denis McDonough was no exception; in fact, his work ethic was strong enough to make him a) make his HS football time in spite of his smaller stature, and b) stand out in BO's committees and teams such that he worked circles around the others, even when ill.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says modern (his book is now 10+ years old) technology is allowing scientists to create bionic arms and legs

(the rest of my reading & writing for today was in the evening: 8pm - 9pm.)

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says he & his team guided the country through the recession of 2008-2009, and we recovered faster than expected, faster than other countries.  (Why?  -- I'm guessing it's partly a scale issue - we're bigger & richer.)  He wondered if he'd done the right thing in getting things back to how they were, as opposed to possibly pushing bolder reforms with a new & better economy in his vision.  But no.  He ended up being glad how things went, and then began to focus on environment, education, health care..... etc.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says our society contains major evidence of Loyalty within tribalism.  This seems almost self-generated, since it happens everywhere.  Hmmmm.  I wonder if I'm right here.  Haidt includes a photo of a car with "OGLORY" license plates, below another symbol of crossed swords indicating loyalty to _______ (a team?).

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says he knew of "Dr. J" in the Steinhof prison in Vienna.  VF says he thought of Dr. J as "the devil" due to his evil killing of all psychotic patients.  VF lost track of Dr. J until after the war.  Dr. J had died of cancer at age 40, but to those who knew him, he was one of the best people they had around them.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says he and his team gambled on a solution that involved 5 failing banks & financial institutions being bailed out by the US government (BO's team), and the rest were able to raise their needed infusions of cash through investments that came in almost as fast as they'd gone out 9 months earlier.  WOW!  BO came close to overseeing a plan that could have led the country into a deep recession, but did not.  WTG, BO!!

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says the experiments with the camping rival boy groups in 1954 show that males are tribalists by nature.  Females generally compete in groups of 2.  Both groups form coalitions and make agreements to further their group success.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says psychoanalysis/psychology has taken the blame for saying "man is pansexual."  Rather, VF says, man is "pan-determinative."  I.e., man determines who he is (to some extent), and how he will live.  (amen!)

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls how his team continued to hold things together (e.g., processing bankruptcy issues for GM and Chrysler) (not Ford?), and the public, along with Congress, was watching his every move.  HIGH STRESS!!

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says that in 1954, in Oklahoma, a man named Sharif organized an outing of 2 groups of 11 boys each, to go on an outing in the woods for ____ days.  The 2nd group arrived 5 days after the first one.  The first discovered and claimed a swimming hole & made improvements.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says some Euro/Russian scientists are experimenting with the frozen DNA of woolly mammoths, somehow reconstructing the egg, and implanting it in a modern-day elephant.  The first woolly Mammoth in 5,000 years would then be born.  (I have not heard of this happening).  Harari then asks "why stop there?" and explains that we could possibly do the same to create the first Neandertal being in 30,000 years.  Harari says we might be morally obligated to "resurrect" Neanderthals, since we "conquered" them and they went extinct.

This is the crux of our dilemma in the USA today.

I feel better about today, since I've kept my resolution to lose 10 pounds over the next 30 days:  I'm doing this by completing my full base-80 routine for today (per above).  I'll see how my weight does after one day, when I weigh in tomorrow morning.
But I feel like I so often feel on the 1st day of a renewed resolve to achieve something:  I feel good, and I feel apprehensive.
GOOD:  I did it for 1 day
APPREHENSIVE:  What will I do tonight (bed by 10:30, wear tape & mask), and how will I feel tomorrow morning at 5:00 AM?  Will I go for another day?  I think (know!) I will.  I resolve to do it.

This evening, I've been tempted to eat more stuff, thinking that I had 2 full meals, and I can add to them a bit..... etc.  But NO - I have told myself "NO!" when those thoughts occur.

So all this is making me a bit apprehensive.  But I still feel good about my 1-day achievement.  And I will NOT eat anything more tonight.  PERIOD.

It's not that hard for me to do this.

In other news, Lyla (14) wrote me a thank you card for my presence 2 weeks ago when the rest of the family were in AZ attending Cubby's baseball tournament.
Lyla is thoughtful and sweet.

I really want DT to call me within the next 2 weeks with CASH news about Akanda.  I'm SOOOOOO tired of waiting.  I want to quit Dr. P's, and start travelling to see my family & friends.

Please, Mr. Universe....... (heh heh)....... why not NOW?

Meh.

Got up, didn't do any routine activities, except make bed.

Had coffee & smoothie; did laundry.

Listened to podcasts, "met" Michael Wolff (anti-Trump biographer).

Talked to GG; he's hurting, but I distracted him from his pain for a while.

And now........

Qui sait?


I'm wondering what it is that's stopping me from doing my routine, playing & practicing piano..... reading.

I've thought it might be a "depression" - connected with end of life, aging, lack of progress with Akanda, loss of Chrissy as a daughter-in-law (not official yet, but likely), and the Tesla/Trump syndrome with regard to Rodney buying a Tesla and Eli saying he'd vote for Trump.


That's quite a lot, but while I'm here swimming around in it...... I seem to have found a way of coping:  Distract myself with "must do's" at any given moment:  laundry, meals, personal hygiene, podcasts, on-line games (crosswords, solitaire).

And reminding myself that "I, KEN TAYLOR, ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED!!!!!!!"

Such is my current life.  Meh.
