READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says quipus were very efficient and effective; the new rulers on the continent (Spaniards) did not learn the system of quipus, and so they faded away, especially since the conquered folk could easily cheat the un-quipu-accustomed Spaniards.

(I am tired - only got 4 hours of sleep - got up early to pack & drive to Southern Utah ahead of the traffic.  It's Thanksgiving Eve!)

*******************

In my on-line scrabble word with friends game, about 2-3 days ago, I had a row of letters, and they spelled quipu, which is the word describing the tool used by pre-Columbian Andean civilization to count.  Yesterday, when I read the passage (p. 141) about quipus, I recalled the word in the game.  I had formed it, and within 2 days, it came up in SAPIENS.  AMAZING!!

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that while the Sumerians were developing their scripts (partial and full), in South America, the pre-Columbian Andean civilizations developed a system for counting/keeping track by numbers.  They created quipus: multi-colored cords with tied knots to signify various quantities of things.  Upon the Spanish arrival, Spanish people learned of these quipus and depicted them in their drawings.

It's interesting but not all that important to know these things.

Well, I'm still fighting bedbugs, if only mentally.  I'm being extra careful and inspecting every likely place every day.  Wash all clothes daily.  Change bedding weekly.  I'm glad I have a full day today to do this and other things before leaving for a week + to Utah (for Thanksgiving in St. George, and then north to SLC; possibly making a loop to SF, and then back to Winnetka).

20191125 SAVERS for MONDAY

SILENCE

Today, upon waking, I did remember that I wanted to silence my brain for 60 seconds.  It seemed to be easier (compared to when I do it later in the morning).  But it was still difficult to even try.

AFFIRMATIONS

  1. I, Ken Taylor, am a loving human being.

  7. I, Ken Taylor, am a loving human being.
  8. I, Ken Taylor, am a loving human being.
  9. I, Ken Taylor, am a loving human being.
Also said aloud for 60 seconds.

VISUALIZATION

I weighed in at 189.2.  :-(
This was due to my going to John & Paul's for dinner last night, and having a ton of fattening food:  brie & olive crackers, peanuts, curry chicken w/rice, asparagus, bean/peanut/boiled egg/onion salad, 2 1/2 glasses of white wine, 1 1/2 peices of apple pie a la mode.  It's a wonder I didn't gain 5 pounds!

  5. inversion table 3 1-min sets
  6. push-ups 2 sets of 25 (since today is Nov 25;  I'll do 2 sets of 27 on 11/27)

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says the earliest known writing might have been written by an accountant named (or titled) Kushim, in approx 2400-3000 BC, on a clay tablet.  We (scientists) have been able to decipher the writing to give numbers/quantities of barley over a period of time (37 months).

Harari notes that the earliest (known) writing was not created by a poet or a philosopher.  (et alors?)

********************

I have had no indication from David that the money call would come today.  But since that is NOT the norm, what if he calls today to say it's happened??

Well, may it be so, for the sake of my retirement, my budget of today, and my sanity.

(end)

That seems right.

20191124 SAVERS for SUNDAY

SILENCE

Tried to silence my brain for 60 seconds.  This is MUCH harder to do if I do it after being awake for an hour.  (I listened to SGU podcast at 5am)  Next time, I'll try to remember to do the silence upon awakening.

  5. inversion table 3 1-min sets
  6. squats 35
  7. push-ups 24 (since it's 11/24 today; tomorrow, I'll do 2 sets of 25)

READING, WRITING

I read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says the ancient Sumerians initially used only PARTIAL SCRIPT, meaning that the characters (numbers and symbols) represented only limited things.  They be used for mathematical calculations, but not to write love poems.  Latin, etc.  are FULL SCRIPTS.

This is becoming quite detailed, but it's a necessary step in understanding the evolution of social aspects of Sapiens.

*****************

Last night, I slept for the first time on my new mattress - KEROTA (moi) in KARINA (the bed).  It is firmer than a water bed (which I slept on for 25+ years).  I'm likening my new mattress to a hotel mattress - medium firmness, clean sheets, warm comforter.  I LOVED waking up to a cool fresh airy (window open all night) room, and being cozy under my down comforter.  I used my CPAP, so I slept better than I have in a while.

At least SOME aspects of my life are pleasant, and this is one of them.  :-)

  1. ankle/wrist circles 70
  2. toe/finger stretches 70
  3. bicycle crunches 70
  4. shoulder rolls 70
  5. inversion table 3 1-min sets
  6. squats 70

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says the very first (known, at least) indications of writing were by Sumerians, who used (apparently) a combination of "Base-6" and "Base-10" systems.  They are likely responsible for our current tradition of dividing the day into 24 equal hours, hours into 60 minutes, minutes into 60 seconds.  And also, we divide circles into 360 degrees because of their use of "Base-6."

I'm remembering some math teacher (was it Archibald Love in Vienna?) trying to get across Base-10, Base-7, and Base-12.  These concepts are necessarily expressed (by me & everyone) in Base-10 nomenclature.  For Base-12, we used 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,T,E,10,11, etc.  I remember I got the concept, but I never got used to it, to the point of doing math in Base-12.

So, the Sumerians, who lived in Sumeria (present day Southern Iraq), were the first (known) people to be "civilized" - to have a "civilization."  They used a combination of numbers and symbols to record things such as quantities of grains, and numbers of months, and names.

NOTE:  Sumer, site of the earliest known civilization, located in the southernmost part of Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in the area that later became Babylonia and is now southern Iraq, from around Baghdad to the Persian Gulf.

*******************

Well, today is the day I install my new mattress, which came in a box.  It's all compressed into a roll.  I will immediately encase it in a bedbug proof mattress cover, and put it on my boxspring, but I'll be keeping it about 6" away from the bedboard, so that any residual bedbugs will not be able to "enter my sleeping territory."

I'm counting on the heat treatment + my continuous precautions (washing clothes daily, showering twice a day, frequent and regular inspections) to end the bedbug infestation nightmare that has plagued me since August of this year.

Sunday 11/10:  I saw a lone (was it lone?) bedbug on my green duvet cover.  I tried to capture it in a plastic bag, but as I tried to coax it in, it flipped up and landed somewhere I could not see.  I was SOOOOO angry that it was there, and that I had lost it.

As a result of this upsetting event, I began to consider what to do about my bed needs; I researched beds, visited Sit-n-sleep, and decided on Mayfair's Karina hybrid mattresses (combo of inner springs and foam).  It is shipped in a box.

I also researched bedbug proof mattress covers, and ordered 2 twins & 1 queen (for the box springs), and I went to Target and picked them up; I brought them home.

Saturday 11/16:  Had carpets cleaned.  Left the room airing out and drying while I went to Lisa's to celebrate her birthday (on Sunday evening).

Monday 11/18:  Drove home to Winnetka, brought the queen box springs back into the bedroom, thoroughly inspected and vacuumed  the 2 twin mattresses and my queen box spring, and encased them in the mattress covers which are zippered & supposedly bedbug proof.

Wednesday 11/20:  I saw another bedbug crawling on the comforter (white).  I was mortified!!!!  I captured the bedbug and it's still in a plastic bag along with what appears to be a 2nd one that did not move.

I immediately inspected all bedding (did not find any more), and washed clothes and bedding.  I left the clothes & bedding in the dryer for 2 heating cycles for each load.

Thursday 11/21 & Friday 11/22:  spent the days with Lisa's family while she was in Utah.  At the local San Clemente Target, I bought a 2nd queen size bedbug mattress cover.

Friday 11/22:  Drove back home late Friday night; the new mattress had been delivered.

Today I'm re-washing all bedding, and I'm setting up the new mattress - I'll place it 6" away from the bedboard, just in case there are residual bedbugs in the bedboard, or in the walls (plugs).  I'll sleep 6" away from the bedboard for now.

Whew!  I found it tedious and aggravating to try to reconstruct these events.  But with the help of these posts, I was able to do it.  My memory is not what it should be.  It's never been good; but I should be able to make statements about what happened when, especially these NIGHTMARE events, without having to go through the above.  But I do.  Oh well.

*sigh*

Read for 60 seconds in Cooking Without Fat by George Mateljan.  He says "the only oil we used was to sharpen our knives.  The fact is that ANY FAT IS STILL 100% FAT, whether monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. He decided to cut out ALL fats, since there is SOME fat in all foods already - no need to ADD any fat!

But food without fat doesn't taste as good.  So he focused on 100 recipes that add no fat, and avoided high-fat ingredients.

He says all the recipes in his book are delicious, low or absent fat, refined sugar, salt, soy sauce, or any ingredient that contains more than 30 percent of calories from fat.  (except tofu)

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says after the Agricultural Revolution (12K BC to 8K BC), and until approx 3.5 BC to 3.0 BC, cities were small because the human brain could not store information.  But then, in ancient Sumaria, someone developed a way to store information OUTSIDE the brain:  Writing.

Interesting way of characterizing the transition from "prehistoric" to "historic."

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in COOKING WITHOUT FAT by George Mateljan.  He says he's affiliated with Health Valley foods who have made it their goal to offer tasty, nutritional non-fat or low-fat foods.  I will look for their label if I think about it.

Yesterday we celebrated Lisa's birthday; she asked for & got steak, prepared by Rodney.  It was some of the best I've ever had.  We also had a wonderful salad and mashed sweet potatoes to die for!  Finally, chocolate lava (?) cakes with vanilla ice cream.

I've put mine in my belly; I'm surprised that I wasn't back to 190 pounds this morning.  (I was close at 189).

So, I'm back to my routine diet & exercise program, in anticipation of "feasts" coming up (Thanksgiving being one of them).

Read for 60 seconds in COOKING WITHOUT FAT by George Mateljan.  He says that eating & food are a focal point for our society.  We gauge the rest of our lives around mealtimes.  But sill, we pay little attention to nourishment, in favor of convenience and taste.  So he's going to tell us how to eat to meet all 3 factors:  taste, convenience and nutrition.

In David's last email, he said they'd be having attorney talks on Tuesday next, to discuss the transfer of the money.  I think this might mean that they'll talk about doing it.  Again.

I wish they'd just DO IT!!!!!!!!!

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in COOKING WITHOUT FAT by George Mateljan.  He says he wanted to write a book to help people prepare foods without fat so that they can enjoy a longer, healthier & happier life.  I agree with him, but in 60 seconds, I can hardly get into what he's saying about this.

I'll try to cut back on fats.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that after the Agricultural Revolution (between 12K BC and 8K BC), Sapiens began to need to track things by using numbers, and the scope of the need exceeded the capacity of one human brain, so Sapiens developed numbering systems.

This seems right to me.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says sapiens have brains that are evolved to contain only certain information, and that eventually the brain dies; it might pass on the information to others before death, but after 2-3 generations, the information tends to become garbled.

I agree with Harari about this.

Earlier this morning as I lay in bed, I recalled a very frustrating dream; that was followed by meditation on what/who I am addressing when I begin my daily routine.

The dream was about my old house in SLC; I drove by and noticed that they had installed a spiral staircase at the back.  Now this house was not on the corner:  it was the 2nd house on the block.  And yet, I was able to park my car right in front of the house.  The current owner (female) noticed me, and I nodded in approval of what had been done to improve & decorate.  She was quite busy, but still allowed me to come in and take a tour.  Along the way, the male owner began to explain what they were doing.  No room was finished, yet I could see what they were doing with each one.  Walls moved, new furniture installed, and even new windows cut into brick walls.  It was amazing.  He eventually showed me upstairs where books were scattered on shelves & on the floor.

Hmmm.  Well, eventually I ended my "tour" and went back to my car, parked on 6th South.  But it was no longer there.  With grave anticipation, I looked at the signs and saw the dreaded "Permit parking only," something that was not there the last time I drove in that area.  Further, the street was now a One Way street, and I had parked the other way.  I concluded that my car must have been towed away while I was on the house tour.

Lying in bed remembering the dream, I couldn't really get it out of my head.  I began to wonder what it could mean.  Some say houses in dreams are us.  So, if that's true, I am not finished in ANY room.  The current owners are also me, working on the house.  They represent my desire to upgrade, improve, change for the better, decorate.  But yet the part of me that was touring the house was only an observer of the changes - not the creator.  Then, when I attempted to drive away, I had lost the ability to do so by not paying attention to the signs, or possible changes in the city traffic flows.

So, maybe I'm telling myself to get with it.  Finish the house.  And enjoy the new fit, the new look that I already have within me.  And pay attention to details at all times.  In short, combine detail and flow.

*sigh*

Enough writing for today.

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the imagined norms, manners, etc., of Sapiens must be taught/learned - passed on from one person to the next.  Bees don't need to do this - it's in their DNA.  But Sapiens (e.g., Hammurabi) must deliberately teach others that there are 3 classes of human beings; this is imagined, not genetic.

Sounds right to me.

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the order/laws/norms of our society are comprehensible when they concern a human being learning and following the rules of a football game.  But there are many MUCH larger, MUCH more complex entities that require MUCH more capacity than a human brain can handle.  So we have groups/entities that exist because of a collective effort:  I'll be the welder, you be the lawyer.  Each as a separate "assignemtn" which the other might know nothing or very little about.

Harari gives examples of ants & bees which function as they do based on their genetic makeup, and not because they follow sets of rules.  The queen bee functions as a leader, but she never has to negotiate labor relations with the worker bees.  Etc.

These examples are interesting, and they do shed light on how things are for sapiens.  But where's he going with all this?

I feel like we've evolved into the current configuration without planning or realizing what we're doing.  Aren't we, in a way, like a hive of bees, going on about our business, without really knowing how it happened, or what the ramifications might be?

I'm not saying it's not important to know what's REALLY going on, as Harari wants us to know.  But I'm also placing some value on the "let it flow"evolution of society.  So let's do both.  We're smart enough to let things flow, but be watching for any hazards along the way.

READING, WRITING

Read for 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says, in the next chapter titled "Memory Overload" that humans do not have evolutionary genes to play football, for example.  We might have the physical genes to allow us to walk, run, kick, etc, which are then used to play football.  But we have no "football gene."  We merely agree with each other that we'll play the game according to imaginary rules we've come up with collectively.

This seems obvious to me.

****************************

Well, this sucks!  What are my problems today?

  1. No David Deal money call.... after so many years!  At least 5 years.  I'm not sure what it means that I've hung on this long, and that I'm willing to hang on longer.
  2. BED BUG found this morning, on top of my comforter.  I tried to catch it, but when I was about to coax it into a plastic baggie, it flipped up and I never saw it again.  It could have landed on me, on a pillow, on the floor.... I don't know.  BUT WHY MUST THIS BE HAPPENING AGAIN??????  After all we went through to get rid of the bugs, here is one actually crawling across my comforter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was at about 6:30 when I saw it.  I have since sat in bewilderment, dismay, tears...... wondering what I should do now.  I've considered several things:   a.  Throw out all my bedroom furniture, bedding and "stuff" that could host a bed bug or its eggs.   b.  Keep everything, having washed all the bedding, until after Saturday 11/16, when the carpet cleaners will be here.  Put the old mattress & etc. in the garage (park on the street), and during that following week, buy a new mattress & box spring (cheap one).   c.  Move to SLC or OC.
  3. RENTAL:  Have to pay the repair guy in cash, which messes up my budget.  Oh well.  At least I found someone to do the repairs for MUCH LESS than I was quoted earllier.  So this "problem" has been mostly resolved.  I still have to deal with it today.

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says  shared imagination (= inter-subjective order) exists (e.g., dollar, Peugot, The USA, etc.), and that if one individual stops believing in one of them, it won't make much difference.  But if you'd like to change or eliminate one of them, you'd have to convince MANY people (maybe even BILLIONS).

Logically, if we contemplate "escaping" from one shared imagination, we must be imagining a new one/alternate one.  If we attempt to "run away" from an existing imagination, it's like we're escaping from a prison.  But following the logic, we are not really escaping prison - we're only running from a smaller prison to a larger one.

Hmmmmm.  It seems a bit pessimistic to characterize this situation with images of "impossible billions" and "prisons."  But it follows that individuals and collectives might, or might not be able to change their shared imaginations.  There are many levels or degrees of this:  a)  Puegot President b)  Puegot Company c) French financial law d) French government e) Global economy.

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that inter-objective order exists just as surely as physical order exists (e.g., radioactivity).  If ONE person changes his/her beliefs, that's what happens; but it can't affect a whole society.  If A WHOLE SOCIETY adopts a new belief system, then they can share inter-objective orders.

I stopped writing when Joe called; I was SO GLAD to spend the time with him, that I didn't regret it, nor the interruption in my writing.  I don't even feel like continuing the analysis of SAPIENS right now.  During my convo with Joe, we talked about his kids' achievements, and specifically Ada & Ethan - 4.0.  Then Elliot & Oliver, and how they could possibly be achievers in other areas.  I want to acknowledge their ninja & gymnastics efforts; Joe will send videos, and I will send them something.

READING, WRITING

Read 60 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says there are 3 "orders" we need to define (in order to understand how things are for us humans):

objective order (e.g., radioactivity harm exists, even if Mme. Currie didn't believe it did)

subjective order (e.g., a child's imaginary friend, which exists only in the child's subjective consciousness, and which disappears when the child becomes an adult)

inter-subjective order (e.g., that which links the subjective consciousness-es of individuals who are part of larger groups of people; many of history's most important drivers: law, money, gods nations)

This makes sense to me.

I copied my list from yesterday below.  I think I'll try to give each person a "one liner" or maybe a couplet.  It would be daunting to do this for everyone on the list every day, or even every week.  So I will start with one, and move forward as inspiration directs.
