Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the Roman Empire was frought with battles, some won, some lost, but almost always with WARS won.  The news came to Rome that a small faction in Iberia (Spain) was not having Roman domination - they fought and won battles for their freedom.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says that for him, a turning point came after several years of writing on his blog.  He'd been published now and then, after having submitted his work to the magazine in question.  But each time, they made him "start over" as if they'd never heard from him.  THIS time, they contacted him to ASK PERMISSION to publish his work.

Goins is saying that this kind of turning point is not possible unless you go through the process of branding, finding a voice, and becoming noticed.  He says that in times past, others were publishers, and deciders of your future as a writer.  But with blogging, we are ALL publishers.  WE decide what gets posted on our blogs.  And then magazines (etc.) have to ASK for permission to use our work.

This all seems quite daunting to me right now.  I must decide how to utilize this newly-understood information, and see if I want to pursue writing.

Goins went from "marginal writer" to "breadwinning writer."

Read for 70 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says, very eloquently, that he began to read in his teen years, and yet says he only vaguely understood what he read; he also didn't know how to pronounce some of the big words, but he knew what they meant.  Later, he tried to impress girls with his pseudo-intellect, but it mostly didn't work.  He had the sense to balance his reading hobby with scholastic achievement and athletic pursuits (basketball).

I'm impressed with BO's presidency, but now even more impressed by his level-headed approach to growing up.  I naturally wonder why I didn't get the reading bug back then, and I'm remembering my father coming to my room with a stack of books he thought I should read; he "caught" me playing a made-up game of "separating cards."  He wasn't having that.  Read these books, he advised.  But I do NOT recall his ever following up to see if I'd read anything, or what I'd read, or what I thought about what I'd read.  Well, time went on, and he got sick and went to Walter Reed for treatment, leaving me and my Mom and sisters to live out the rest of his tour of duty in Vienna by ourselves.  I don't know for sure, but I think I went back to separating cards, or some other equally meaningless activity.

Read 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He  that the tide of money is dammed by society, fearing it will corrupt and drown us.  And yet we break those dams through wars, etc., only to build them up again.  Harari then introduces the concept that there is something beyond gold and silver when we consider the global economic village:  steel.  And he ends the chapter, making me want to know how steel plays into the discussion.

Read 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says I will need to gauge my frequency of - what should I call it? - my submissions to publishers based on my need for rest and sanity.  IOW, if I badger a magazine constantly with my writing, they might get into the habit of ignoring me.  But if I "let out some line" they might become curious and pay more attention.

That all seems like another world to me right now.  I'm not writing every day, and I haven't moved forward with much of anything that Goins says I should.  Well, I AM writing almost every day - HERE.  And so that part is beginning to happen for me.  But the rest of what he says I should do is not happening for me.  Maybe some day, it will.

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says money has a "darker side" - we might very well sell some of our children in order to feed the others.  And, we don't trust our neighbor - we trust the coin they hold.  If they run out of coin, we run out of trust.

I don't agree with Harari on this point.  Of course, he's not speaking in absolutes.  But still, I have many friends who don't care how much money I have.  Sally once said to me, "Otis, I don't care what kind of car you drive."  And both David and George and Bill accept me for who I am, rich or poor.  And my children likely would say to anyone:  My father has $X, and I know he loves me and I love him whatever the value of "X" might be.

Perhaps Harari would say I'm an exception.  Or lucky.  But I don't know.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He describes what I could do to BRAND MYSELF:  He named his website goinswriter.com, and he chose a headshot and put it on everything:  FaceBook, Twitter, website, etc.  (I don't know of any other places he could have done this, but maybe he did.  AND THEN....... he began to write.  It was during this period that he found his "voice."

I recently read a snippet from David Sedaris (it was about how he hates Pushy People).  I could hear him saying the words I read.  Was that because he had developed his "voice?"  Well, I'll think so for now.  I'm guessing, however, that Jeff Goins will say that "voice" is much more than hearing the author's voice.

Well, now.... this day could be the 1st of a week, after which there will be news that a buyer has agreed to purchase David's mine for $50MM.  That sort of freaks me out.  I was able to come up with $500 to help a friend in need.  $500 seems so little when you consider a $50MM sale.

And I very well could be part of it.  I'm allowing myself a bit of excitement.  Why?

1. I will be able to help family (e.g., savings fund for grandchildren)
2. I will be able to help friends
3. I will be able to contribute to many causes
4. I will be able to wipe out my debt
5. I will be able to update/repair my house
6. I will be able to create more wealth
7. I will be able to give back, rather than earn.

But wait ....... I'm going to slow this down, for now, because it hasn't happened yet.  I'm still in "waiting mode," anticipating a money call from David.

*sigh* - but ti's a happier sigh than those up til today.

20210126 IS TODAY A PRE-D-DAY?

DT called with a sparkle in his voice.

They (he and Michael Harrington) expect to have a solid offer for the mine of $50MM within the next week or two.  Probably net $40MM after fees & taxes, to be split between Michael and David 25/75.  David's share: $30MM.  His plan is to reinvest 10MM+ of this in Michael's high-yield investment plan (e.g., $10MM becomes $100MM in short time).  If he invests $20MM in that, he'd have $10MM to "live on" - hopefully to share a bit with me.

We'll see.

I just might be figuring out how to apply the "windfall" money in the ways I thought of way back 5-6 years ago.

Notes on David's call:

• AUWorth is the entity Michael Harrington is working with.  They are a Canadian company which is domiciled in the Caribbean somewhere.  They buy land/mines in North America.
• Michael will submit his proposal (on DT's behalf) within the next 7 days; the escrow would close no later than March 15th
• They might decide to accept Swiss Francs as payment; he mentioned also possibly Singapore (dollars?).
• DT mentioned that I could develop a "template" for high-end investors/non-profits to participate in the Timpson Foundation humanitarian efforts.
• DT was pleased that they don't require a "43-101" *  but added that Michael will be doing it anyway, as a "plan B" in case this deal should fall through.

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says in analyzing money, that it allows trust to develop between social entities; but it also has a dark side - it also CAN allow money to be applied to values (love, loyalty, family, etc.).  There are things we COULD do with money, but they are things we "just don't do," such as sell our children.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says my voice is a combination of passion, personality, and people.  To find it, I'll have to spend significant time, and not be impatient. As I take note of my unique style of writing, and of my ideal reader I'm trying to reach, I will begin to find my voice.

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that money makes the world go around.  He says that people believe in and trust money because OTHER people believe in and trust money, while religion asks us to believe in and trust something.

I'll disagree with his simplistic stance here.  People believe in and trust RELIGION..... ALSO because other people believe in and trust something.  I'm a good example of this.  I felt inadequate to actually KNOW something of my own accord.  So I did, in fact, gradually over the years of my life, come to believe in and trust religion because OTHER people did.  By about age 35, I began unraveling this web of self-deception, and began searching for what "I" believe.

But I don't disagree with Harari about money.  I calculate the value of something based on what OTHER people tell me it is in Dollars and Cents.  And apparently all of humankind is willing to do so, and have done so for millennia.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says in Designing my Look I should keep these tips in mind:

• be recognizable, interesting
• use a professional photographer or designer; put all the input you can into it, but let the professional do his/her job.
• be certain people will notice your logo (although he does not say how to be certain)
• get feedback from friends, fans, followers

Then he says I should "find my voice" which he says is quite difficult to do, and likely will not come suddenly, but over a long period of writing.

 Happy as I have ever been in so many years.

Biden won, and is now sworn in as president.

Our democracy has been bent, but not broken.

This is a time for healing, and for being glad to be an American.

Whew - we came so close to losing it all.

But today was also supposed to be a day when I talked to David.  That would have been nice.

I'm so tired of thinking "today's the day" and then being ignored (by David), and being disappointed that it wasn't "today."

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He addresses the question about inter-AREA (continental) commerce, and how gold became a common denominator for all societies:  In India, where gold was plentiful, merchants soon realized that its value was much greater in Mesopotamian or European societies; hence, the value of gold rose in India.  IOW, the people traded and the value of gold "equalized" throughout the worlds of commerce.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says I should take care in designing my "look" because it's my brand, my logo, my recognizable aspect.  Two photos, for example, could be 1)  of me when I first get up in the morning, and 2)  with heavy makeup (NOT) and a wild coiffeur.  Both would be of me.  But neither is the recognizable LOOK that I am seeking as an artist/writer.

  wrt 1 (choosing a name), he says I should be careful; it's hard to change later.  Also, don't jump at "the perfect name;"  rather, think about the pros and cons of each potential choice.

20210101 NOTES ON NEW YEAR'S DAY IN AMERICAN FORK, UTAH

 It's almost time for me to go see David & Jeannie for dinner.  It should be lots of fun, so why do I feel depressed right now?

*sigh*

I'm not quite sure why things are so unstable for me.  I think it could have to do with my diet/exercise inconsistencies.  But more, I think it's due to the extension - seemingly eternal - of the D-Day I've been waiting for, for more than 6 years now.

There's some greater hope for next week.  But it could be "more of the same," too.

So I'll be off to get ready, and then driving to SLC.

I had a great talk with George, and then a followup talk that was marred by a bad connection.  No calls from anyone (not Joe, not Lisa).
