Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the "imagined nations" of today's Earthly societies and NOT evident in pre-Industrial Revolution times; they were far different from today's nations.  Harari uses an example that rang true to me:
If you have the ingredients for a cake on your pantry shelf, and one day, you make the cake, it is "born" on the day you make it, even if you've had the ingredients for 2 months.
If you witness the "big bang" and see all of the elements become a universe...... and much later, those elements become the Earth..... the "birth" of the Earth is when the elements became the Earth, and not at the Big Bang.
Similarly, if the Earth elements one day later form a mountain with rocks in it, those rocks are not "born" at the Big Bang, but rather when they became the rocks in the mountain.
Hence, we say things like "these rocks are 2.4 million years old," knowing that their elements predate that point in time.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says that Schweder (his mentor?) made a statement about how people's morality is punctuated by various "landmarks" throughout their lives.  I.e., we might be raised one way, and later recall or review the teachings of our youth, but then have a new awareness of those teachings in light of other events in our lives.
NOTE:  I'm reminded of the discussions we had as young LDS missionaries in France, where we observed ourselves "evolving" from "right wing" to "left wing,"  while others did the opposite.  Also, I'm "reminded" of my own life which evolved from strong LDS beliefs to agnosticism, followed by a recent affirmation of LDS beliefs, and how they can be good for some people, some families, and some societies.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that throughout the history of Sapiens on the Earth, they have formed and lived in tight-knit family and community units, knowing each other intimately...... UNTIL the beginning of the last 2 centuries (1800).  During that time, the intimacy of the family and community has withered:  now, state and market have replaced that intimacy.  However, the members of the families and communities on Earth still IMAGINE that they belong to such families and communities.
NOTE:  I'm inclined to agree with Harari.  But must add that there are still REAL family and community units on the Earth:  mine, for instance.  It might be altered by the Industrial Revolution and the forces of the state and the market, but it's still there, still real, and still quite strong.

NOTE:  These passages are depressing.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls sitting with his Treas Sec'y, Tim Geithner, who was confirmed by the slimmest of margins in the Senate and was unaccustomed to public scrutiny,  and discussing the financial plight of the USA:  there were 5 BOMBS (banks, insurance companies) who could fail and cause havoc among the US and International markets, and likely cause the US real estate market to disappear.  They acted by infusing another $200B into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and braced themselves for further actions required to save our financial crisis.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says his upbringing was by Jewish parents who had survived the antisemitism in WWII, and had been strongly defended by FDR, a Democrat.  When at Yale, Haidt was among the "liberal elite" who could not contemplate any kind of support for Conservatives, who complained that Liberals were wrong to demand government support for minorities, among other things.  Haidt's group did not consider any merits of a moral code among Conservatives.
NOTE:  It's the same struggle we're having today.  Who has the moral edege?

NOTE:  the family unit has survived all of these changes, until possibly now, when many seek to re-define family.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls processing the "social compact" that is generally progressing in the USA - in spite of the pushback from conservatives, who want rich white people to maintain control over the finances, education, and the "minimal" government.
NOTE:  what BO wrote on this page is soooooo very important!  He describes the rise of our social democracy post-WWII, when the government enacted programs that would lift the most poverty stricken people out of poverty, and establish a safety net to minimize the penury and shame in many cities.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He further addresses the "ethnic divinity" he knew about, but actually felt in India.  He asks questions such as "what is the ultimate effect of sacrilige on our society?  For example, if an artist photographs a cross in his own urine, is that somehow making our society "dirtier?  Even if no one sees it?

NOTE:  I've addressed this issue throughout my own life..... I imagine what the effect might be on a)  my life, and b) on society in general, if I do something "wrong" - like if I were to silently curse at an acquaintance, or at a motorist who drove in what I consider to be a discourteous way.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says, when asked what "LOGOTHERAPY" means, he answers that it is centered on man's SEARCH for MEANING, compared to Freud's "search for pleasure" and Adler's "search for superiority."  He's sometimes listed as the "3rd Viennese School of Psychotherapy" (or some such).  "logo" (Greek) signifies "meaning."

NOTE:  Due to 2 major breakdowns WRT my car within 3 days, costing me over $2,500 in repairs, I slipped down into a depression of sorts, in which I did the absolute bare minimum of self-maintenance.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says, to introduce a section called "The Collapse of the Family,"  that before the IR, people lived in a nuclear family, and near extended family, and in intimate communities, and all were reliant on each other for their needs and wants, without expecting payments.  The exceptions were when they needed/wanted goods/services that the family or intimate community could not provide:  then they had to seek those things in the marketplace.  When they lived in royal realms, they were expected to help build the king's castle for no payment, but in return, they were protected by the king from brigands and barbarians.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls getting a lesson in modern-day conservative talk (from a "famouls" Rick Santelli clip) in which the conservatives began to "reverse" the complaints brought up by minorities:
  • racial discrimination --> "reverse racism"
  • workplace sexual harassment --> "feminazis" beating men over their heads
  • big bankers playing casino games --> lazy shiftless moochers in Washington
BO acknowledges that our demands on government HAD changed over the 200 years since we began:  when social injustices were no longer acceptable, wars were fought, and government had to step in to enhance the SOCIAL CONTRACT, insuring the collective masses against unjust disasters, and enhancing our means of travel & communication, even in rural areas where corporations often don't make a profit.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says his time in India taught him a new appreciation for human beings:  the locals distinguished between "left, or dirty" and "right, or clean."  Places were either dirty or clean.  Removing shoes before entering a house is the norm.  Temples and holy places were above the common ground.  He calls it "ethic of divinity."

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harrari.  He gives a summary of the evolution of SAPIENS' social construct, 2 paragraphs I think are important enough to re-type here:

The Industrial Revolution brought about dozens of major upheavals in human society.  Adapting to industrial time is just one of them.  Other notable examples include:
  • (industrial time)
  • urbanization
  • the disappearance of the peasantry
  • the rise of the Industrial proletariat
  • the empowerment of the common person
  • democratization
  • youth culture
  • disintegration of the patriarchy
Yet all of these upheavals are dwarfed by the most momentous social revolution that ever befell humankind:  
  • the collapse of the family and the local community and their replacement by the state and the market. 
As best we can tell, from the earliest times, more than a million years ago, humans lived in small, intimate communities, most of whose members were kin.  The Cognitive Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution did not change that.  They glued together families and communities to create tribes, cities, kingdoms and empires, but families and communities remains the basic building blocks of all human societies.  The Industrial Revolution, on the other hand, managed within little more than two centuries to break these building blocks into atoms.  Most of the traditional functions of families and communities were handed over to states and markets.




Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls having to address the nation's woes (people threatened with losing their homes), along with Mr. Santelli, who did a video clip accusing the Obama government and the Democrats of immoral programs designed to bail out irresponsible home purchasers.   But they really were concerned about wall street tycoons who had made bad bets and were now threatened by the possibility of losing their "empires."

NOTE:  I reviewed the pictures in his book, and came away with renewed admiration for his presidency and his approach.  He really did things right, and will be (or should be) counted as one of America's greatest Presidents (followed by the absolute WORST president we've ever had).

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says most cultures have exhibited a vertical spectrum with God at the top, and the Devil at the bottom, angels, humans, animalis in between.  In India, the culture adopted reincarnation with corresponding punishments and rewards for how the people live in the current life.  Haidt began to feel the "ethic of divinity" in India after living there a while.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He recalls how the nightmare of camp, along with the dreams of returning to a former life, impacted the psychological health/illness of the liberated men.  They said they now had nothing to fear except their God.
