Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He further explores what makes us happy, and gives examples of 3rd world v 1st world countries, where unhappiness abounds no matter what people look like, or how long they can expect to live.


Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls pondering the dilemma of the recession (2008) and how he would approach it, having met with unhappy/laid-off workers on the campaign trail.  And now he was more in a position to help them, and wondered how he would do it.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says morality has evolved in both expected and unexpected ways; generosity to kin is unsurprising; generosity to non-kin is unexplainable.  Perhaps it has to do with genes and evolution, but he doesn't know for sure (another theory & PHD).

Well, it's a milestone day:  42 years ago, I became the father of a baby girl:  Lisa Marie Taylor, now Lisa Marie Taylor Ashton, and herself mother of 3 children.

I feel like I gave myself short shrift today - minimal meditation, minimal exercise, minimal piano, minimal reading & writing.

But at least I did some.

Yesterday, David explained that he expects the documents for the sale of his mine will be in place this week (or next week).  I'm just hoping that this time, it really WILL be true.  "Maybe next time I'll win."

As of now, no money.

20241110 - SLLLAVERS FOR SUNDAY - DING DING DING - IT'S D-DAY!!!!! AND I, KEN TAYLOR, ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED!!!!!!!

It's Sunday evening.

Yesterday, as I drove to Palm Springs to celebrate Paul & John's 55th Anniversary, David called to say it's going to happen in the next few weeks!!

He had the video call on Saturday afternoon with the his 3 partners (John P, Anthony and Ian), and Susan.  They'll be setting up an account in Nevada into which her deposit ($5MM ) will be deposited in the next several days; she adds that the remaining balance ($45MM) will follow within the next 3-4 weeks.  WOW! 


I continued to the Anniversary party & stayed overnight at a local hotel (Hilton/Hampton).  So this morning, I drove back home to Winnetka, where I unwound, had dinner, watched some TV, and then began this account.

I'm hesitant to write TOO much, since things could STILL go wrong.  But this time, I don't think they will.


First and foremost, I'm reminding myself that I, Ken Taylor, already have everything I need.  (WANTS, however, are another category).  And as David would add, "nothing is wrong."

Next, I have decided not to broadcast anything to those who know about this opportunity, with the exception of George.  I did "bubble over" on the phone with him.  Part of my reaction is the very real fact that this potential opportunity came to me in 2014 - 10 years ago!!  (IT'S ABOUT TIME, ISN'T IT?)

Without my asking, David said he couldn't give me any kind of amount that would be attributed to me, but did say that each adult child in his family (there are 8) would be allocated $X, and that it's likely that he and Jeannie will allocate that same amount to me.

My mind is racing - potentially - with what I could do.  But I'm going to now STOP myself:

1)  I don't know with certainty IF it will happen the way David describes.

2)  I don't know with certainty HOW MUCH I will be earning.


My fears also include David possibly being deceived by these people, and ending up with little or nothing.  It's happened to him with other investments.

Well, I will somehow connect today with the CASH D-DAY coming...... And I will not count my chickens before they hatch.


Time for some PIANO, and or more TV.

20241109 SLLLAVERS FOR SATURDAY - COULD THIS BE D-DAY? - AND.... I, KEN TAYLOR, ALREADY HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED!!!!!!!

 Well, I'm sitting here on the 8th anniversary of finding out that Trump would become our 45th president, and I cried.

Now, 8 years later, my whole being is crying out for some explanation of how this could happen AGAIN!!


And, yesterday, David Timpson, Alison Call Hubbard and I celebrated having met 55 years ago (Emerald), and that was deep and sensational and wonderous.


And today, I leave for Palm Springs to go celebrate Paul Frommer and John Brinkley's 55th anniversary (also Emerald).


This seems like about 3 very dizzying turning points.  I don't have vertigo, but WOW!

WRITING

I don't know why I'm not doing my SLLAVERS Routine every day.  Sometimes I feel like doing it, and I still don't.  When I DO do it, I feel a lot better.

Also, when I tape & CPAP, I sleep better.  I did both last night.  I slept really well, and at least 7 hours.  So today, I feel more rested, less achy than I sometimes do.

So, so, on we go.

8 years ago, Justin Rudd wrote:

YOU ARE GIVEN the opportunity each morning, day, and night to be a blessing to the people you come into contact with.  Those people are placed in your life, and in your Facebook life, on purpose.  You have been blessed beyond measure.  Continue to be a blessing to others.  Life is good, and getting better!

When I read this again, after 8 years, I am more convinced that it's true.  Rather than bemoan our plight with Trump's win, we should focus on how we can be a blessing to others we meet.

I happened to turn on the local news, and a story of the loss a family JUST TODAY sustained was featured.  They had moved into their home 2 weeks ago, and were getting settled, when the fires came (the "Mountain Fire") and destroyed their home in just minutes.  Everything they had was gone.  The father being interviewed cried, and lamented "how can I put a roof over my family's head without our home?"

It made me cry, and wonder if I could convince David (IF TODAY IS D-DAY) to help these people.


David texted, "This could be very exciting."

I hope so.  We've waited 10 years.

But, as we've often reminded ourselves, "We already have everything we need."  and "There is nothing wrong."


I feel like many ships and sailed without me, and many doors are now permanently closed for me.

Have they?  Are they?

As is so often the case with my writing, I end up with more unanswered questions, than when I started.

*sigh*


I'm waiting for David to call me, as he said he would, after his video chat/call with John Perron (the Canadian), and Ian and Anthony (the Brits).  The call is going on as I write this.  (unless something has prevented it).

I'm shaking with anticipation.

Today's David's birthday, and I called him to wish him a happy one.  He, Jeannie, and Mike were all on speaker.  There was high positive energy in their voices, because of the following:

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says it's both an oversimplification and a deep analysis of what made/makes Sapiens happy, when you evaluate us over centuries/millennia.  There are studies that show all kinds of conflicting theories.  And how did our evolutionary brains conceive of these kinds of ideas?  Early SAPIENS knew only the thrill of the hunt.  Today, we have no such experience:  we work, earn money, and buy food from others.  So, are we happier?  Or were they?

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says happiness does not follow logical arguments/conclusions.  People in the time of Cleopatra died at a much higher rate than today, and yet Egyptians (under Mubarack) rioted to get what Americans (under Obama) had.  Also, H says that if rich people could afford a "live forever" pill, they'd STILL be unhappy since they'd be subject to the same risks they now endure.  
Oh well, it seems impossible to conclude anything about happiness, other than that we like it.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the ancients had long about concluded that happiness can lie in appreciating what we already have.  Modern analysts, after much surveying, charting, etc., have come to the same conclusion:  while family & community are unravelling today, and while people are lonelier and feeling more deprived when they don't get what they want, most of us are prone to finding happiness in what we already have..... even post-serious illness or other trauma.

Hmmm - that's a concept I've dealt with before.

Frankl also cites his daughter's complaint that "the good Lord" is the source of blessings, but is also the source of trials (e.g., measles)

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says his mother of 2 sons case history illustrates how a person can find meaning in his/her life.  The mother's life, in itself had meaning because she wanted children, and she had children.  No matter that 1 died, and the other was a cripple for life..  And the meaning for each of the sons was to teach their mother how to live.

I'm thinking about how each of us has a "process" for our lives, and if we "do the best we can" in meeting our challenges, we can ascribe to our lives a meaningfulness that might otherwise go without acknowledgement.

20240902 WRITING DAY w/GG

Today I'm on the phone with George, and he and I are using the next 10 minutes to write.


George says that he does better when we're together; he doesn't need me to also be writing, but I decided I would use the time to write anyway.


It's not "D-DAY" and it hasn't been for several weeks.  I spoke to David about it, and his colleague, John Perron, is planning a trip to Toronto where he will set up an agreement about how Acanda will be developed (the mine), and it will involve David, John, and a third party who would each end up owning 1/3 interest.  In return for their ownership, they will set up an agreement that allows for David to receive a lump sum of cash followed by monthly payments.


I don't know these people, but from what David says, they are legitimate and trustworthy.  (crossing fingers that this is true!)


Meanwhile, my "D-DAY" hopes are yet again delayed.  And when "D-DAY" finally arrives (now speculated to be mid-September), it will not mean a "windfall" or a "lump sum" payment for me.  Rather, it'll likely be a monthly payment of some amount similar to what I'm getting from Pruitt/HDA, although David has talked of approx. double that (ie, $4000/month).


Well, so be it.  And I will remind myself, right now, that "I, Ken Taylor, already have everything I need."


So.... GG's 10 minute timer went off, so we're going to stop now.

20240810 IS TODAY D-DAY???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A few days ago, DT told me he would be having a talk with John Perron today.


And he did.


And he called.


And he was EXCITED (in spite of his fatigue from cancer treatments & a recent fall).


And he said  John Perron returned from Toronto, after a very successful meeting with a bloke called Todd Morgan, a highly successful mining person.


Morgan is willing to prep & market Akanda for David & John, and is also willing to invest a substantial amount up front, and will do so very soon.


YAY!


I feel different now.  I'm more relaxed and feel less attached to Dr. Pruitt, and now more desirous of travelling around to see family & friends.

20240720 DOWN DAY

 Well, what can I say?

I'm depressed.  I guess.

Larry & Paul want to come stay; I have so little room, but he's been such a welcoming host in SLC over the last several years..... I should try to host him.

Joe & Chrissy have separated; I still have no way to accept it; it seems so very wrong.

Lisa is distant, as she has been for quite some time, although last conversation revealed that she's getting along with Lyla MUCH better now.

George is SMOKING!  I still can't believe that!  And there's little hope we could ever live together.

David has no or very little time for me in his life.  Yes, he loves me genuinely, but he just never acts on our friendship - or very rarely.  I feel like I'd like to talk to him, but that I'd be intruding if I even call.

AND, Acanda is going nowhere, it seems.  So...... I'm going back to work for Dr. Pruitt.

Piano - haven't taken it back up yet, post-trip.  Maybe it would help.

20240711 POST BD POST

Today's fucked.

Really.

Not even a text from DT re birthday OR ACANDA.

Biden looks Dead.

GG is ailing/sleeping day and night.

It's hot.  Miserably hot outside.

Lisa and Joe both have not really stayed in touch; made feeble attempts to greet me on my birthday.

Teresa sent an electronic greeting to "Virginia" when I think she meant "Ken."  And that was actually intended for Ginny.

I'm out of shape; not sure where I stand physically; definitely bothered, likely depressed with my life.

Not sure what I'll do when I get home:  Dr. Pruitt?  or sell the house?

Feeling dismal & bleak right now. 

20240710 BIRTHDAY POST

 After planning & taking a month-long trip to Europe, I am here in Cyprus (Mammari) with George (GG), and I'm not sure how things are actually going.

That's partly because it's so damn hot here.  GG and I don't really feel like going out unless we have to.

It's been nice to be here with GG, and he and I are still quite in love; I'm surprised about how he's begun smoking, though.  He has yet to explain how he can justify that.  I've noted that many people here smoke, even in the heat of the day.  To me, it just doesn't make sense.

But today's my birthday - 74 - and George has been a delight.  He lit a candle, sang "Happy Birthday" and gave me coffee & 2 pieces of BD cake in bed!  Because we extended ourselves YESTERDAY, today is a "down" (physically) day for George.  So I'm happily corresponding to family & friends, and munching on some potato chips & drinking some ice-cold fruit & soda drinks.

The world is in upset politically, and is still coping with outbreaks of war in Ukraine and Israel.... and we have an old President running for re-election against a despicable felon.  Where will all this take us over the next 4-5 months??

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that Nationalism, Communism and Capitalism might all be "-isms" that DO NOT, in fact, lead to greater happiness.  He says historians do not often address this question, nor opine about which one is better.  Harari raises the question of what degree of happiness certain peoples (e.g., pre-Agricultural Revolution) had, when compared to today.  And, he states (correctly, IMO), that technological developments leading to "improved personal & social lifestyles" do NOT, in every case, lead to greater happiness.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls that decision making as POTUS was characterized by giving his team a challenge to come up with a solution, while knowing that he was the one to give it a green light (or not).  They generally agreed to the "stress test" (_______________ (wish I could define it)) as being the best course of action.  He also became swamped with chance - e.g., a 70% chance that Plan A would work, but doing nothing at all would possibly be a 30% of a good result..... etc.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says Lucas and Sheeran studied the life of Bentham (17XX), and concluded that had he lived today, he'd receive the diagnosis of "Asberger;s Syndrome."

Note:  I'm not sure why this is important.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says he was forced to change clothes into those of a recently killed fellow inmate, and he found in the coat, a Jewish prayer.  He felt this gave him meaning.

(CORRECTION:  I stated earlier that Frankl was able to keep the original manuscript of his book, but that wasn't true, since he "gave up" his coat (along with the manuscript) when he changed clothes.  Frankl makes no mention here of what happened to his manuscript.)

The prayer he found, and his own thought processes, led him to understand the meaning of "the meaning of life."  Others concluded that if they did not survive, then their lives had no meaning.  Frankl concluded that the suffering gave his life meaning.

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says the question of "are we happier with X?"  is seldom asked by historians.
It's been 70,000 years since the Cognitive Revolution:  are we happier now than our predecessors were?
Nationalism says we're happier if we have political self-determination.
Communism says we're happier if we're under the dictatorship of the proletariat.
Capitalism says we're happier if we have economic growth and material abundance, teaching self-reliance and enterprising, resulting in the greatest number of people being the most happy.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls the frustration of the economic crisis of 2007-2008; his team had suggestions, but they were fearful that any of these possible approaches might unravel the GLOBAL economy; BofA and Citigroup were targeted for the replacement of their CEOs and Boards, but many feared it would not result in much beyond symbolism.  They considered nationalizing the banks (per Sweden's solution to their 1999 crisis).


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says Jeremy Bentham (b England 1748) postulated that there were too many rules, etc. in British society, and so offered a simplified approach:  any law should be subject to UTILITY:  if it gives the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people, it's good.  He identified ways of characterizing both pains (dolors) and pleasures (hedons) as they applied to proposed laws.



Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says suffering is unavoidable in any aspect of living; he refers to his most significant experience in the concentration camp at Auschwitz.  He acknowledges that (from post-camp analyses) there was only 1 chance in 28 that anyone would survive.  He recalls his first manuscript of his book which he had hidden in his coat.  He ascribes the meaning of HIS life to be the "survival" of the manuscript, and his own survival (including his inner child), as simply that survival.

I've "screwed up" for the last few weeks.  I don't know why I've lacked motivation.  But today, I am beginning a 12 day plan to follow my exercise/diet routing every day, until I leave for Europe.
For the next 12 days, I'm back to the simple "do routine & weigh daily" approach.

READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says "the modern era" is described by historians who are "close" (in time) to the latest innovations or catastrophic events in pessimistic or optimistic words........ and is also described by other historians who are "farther away" (in time) to those same events, in LESS, or MORE optimistic/pessimistic words.

Harari is trying to cover all the bases, it seems.  But he concludes this chapter saying we can't know which direction we're heading until we're almost there.  I.e., at Heaven's Gate, or Hell's Antechamber.  It will depend on how a possible series of events rolls out in the coming years.


Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls being so frustrated by Wall Street Bankers (Goldman Sachs and Chase, notably), who were WAY out of touch with the common folks, that he (BO) began to smoke more, not less.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He describes how Autism (low empathizing, high systemizing came to be defined - by 2 men who were Autistic.

The spectra Haidt (source:  Simon Baron-Cohen, 2009) uses are "high empathy - low empathy" and "high systemizing - low systemizing" - which immediately led me to ask where I land on the chart (p. 137).  I also asked myself if I was "naturally" empathetic, or if I made a conscious effort to avoid being nosy (I.e., asking others how they feel, or what their lives are like, etc).  I am that way, but I don't know if it's natural, or forced on me by my diplomatic parents.
Systemizing, OTOH, seems to me to be in my nature.



Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says that if the cause of unhappiness is AVOIDABLE, then that cause should be removed.  But if it is UNAVOIDABLE, then perhaps it can be ameliorated by attaching a MEANING to it.  LOGOTHERAPY.

This morning, I am disappointed to weigh in at over 200 pounds; it's because of the chocolate/raisin/yogurt "trail mix" along with the final 1/2 or so of a carton of potato salad, all of which I ate last night.  Grrrrrr to myself!!!!!!


I still realize that I have approximately 5 weeks (less 10 days) until I leave for Europe.  I'm STILL bothered by my protruding gut, and I'm STILL about 10-15 pounds heavier than I'd like to be.  SO......

Today's a FAST DAY.


I'm continuing my plan for the next 12 days.  I hope to resume losing an average of 1/2 pound every day (10 pounds in 20 days), by continuing the following regimen:



EXERCISE

  • FAST DAYS (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)

5:00 - 5:45  1/2 routine

5:45 - 6:30  PIANO

                6:30 - 7:00 2/2 routine

  • SLOW DAYS (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

DAY 1010

I made it to "Day 9” (i.e., 20240520)!!!!!  YAY!!!!!



My new program to lose weight before my trip to Europe next month, consists of the desire to lose weight before I leave (I leave in 30 days from now).


I've continued so far, by doing my routine this morning, and by pseudo-restricting my diet to 2 meals a day, and each one is going to be portion-controlled, and healthy.


My weight has gone up by 0.x pounds - I need to continue losing, not gaining.

Since my annual checkup last month was good, I'm generally feeling good about my health; however.....


My blood panel showed a mildly alarming glucose level, which is within the range called "pre-diabetic."


REALLY??????  I guess I need to take it seriously, even though the reading was at the lower end of the range called "pre-diabetic."  So now I'm more conscious of what I'm eating and how much I'm exercising.


Hence,  my new program to lose weight and eat healthier.  I'm on Day 10


The "Internet" tells me that if you're "pre-diabetic" you should:


  1. ✅Eat healthy foods:  a diet high in fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and olive oil
  2. ✅Exercise more.
  3. ✅Lose excess weight (that's part of my plan)
  4. ✅Quit smoking  (never started)
  5. ✅Take meds as needed.

The list is posted on my dresser mirror.


So far, I've done MOST of the above for  10 days.  YAY!!  I'm visualizing success!!
