READING, WRITING

RUMI

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the idea of capitalism took hold in Europe before it did so in Asian Empires.  But eventually, the world formed a global economy.

NOTE:  I finally worked through mentally how it could be that an absolute monarch should be obligated to "pay" for whatever s/he wanted to do (e.g., fight wars, build palaces, collect fine art, etc.).  After all, if s/he owned everything and everybody, why "pay" for anything?  But, long before this "middle time,"  people developed currency, which allowed them to "pay" other people for goods and services.  Later, when they were conquered by a strong monarch, the currency remained as a tool of trade.  The currency eventually lost its intrinsic value (e.g., paper money/notes replaced gold doubloons), and the paper notes (along with cheaper coins of copper, nickle, brass, etc) began to be the medium of trade; eventually the world adopted the currency of the strongest nation:  the US Dollar.

So.... a medieval monarch might require certain of his/her subjects to train as soldiers (or artists, or farmers), and s/he would pay them in currency.  In that sense, monarchs would be relatively rich or poor, and pay (or not pay) for the things they wanted to do.

OK, I think I've got it now.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls how the Dems were already fighting about the AMOUNT of stimulus to propose; most were unaware of how bad things were about to get, and few were willing to consider a package of $T +.... which is what was needed.

Read for 80 seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee.  He says that the secrets of geometry have been lost, and can be restored, but only with the participation of the feminine.  He says females have been hurt and scarred by the patriarchy in times past, and so they are somewhat (often?) reluctant to participate in today's movement.
NOTE:  I don't get the connection he's making between geometry and the feminine.  Maybe further reading will reveal it.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says, in summary, that our rider (inner lawyer) is quick to attempt to justify the initial leaning of our elephant (emotions).  When accused by others, we "lean" immediately to denial (for example), and then almost immediately, our inner lawyer seeks to justify our leaning.
And, Haidt wonders, why did we evolve with such a configuration?  We could have used our evolved brain capacity (it enlarged to 3 times its size over xmillion years).... to simply discover the truth, rather than to protect our reputation.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He remembers, after returning to his normal life (i.e., after being released from camp), looking at a photograph of prisoners in the camp who were in "sick bay" for a few days.  He actually remembered with gladness that he was able to spend a few days there, not having to work out in the cold.  He actually "rejoiced" - !!

Read for fun in THE COMFORT CRISIS by Michael Easter.
