READING, WRITING

RUMI

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says the 19th & 20th Cs brought many inventions and discoveries that changed the course of industry and warefare (e.g., aluminum, air guns).  If Haber hadn't discovered how to produce amonia out of thin air, the Germans would have lost WWI much earlier.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls lamenting that his Recovery Act was modified by GOP pressure from 4 GOP lawmakers, and it was pretty much all political posturing; he decided against barnstorming in the respective GOP states, anticipating that doing so could badly affect future bills he had in mind.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says the studies he was involved in (there were 10 groups) produced an unusual "group" of subjects who were generally WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and Democratic), and were from Penn State (like he was/is).  He notes that Americans are more WEIRD than Europeans, and NW Americans are more WEIRD than Americans.
NOTE:  Ho Hum.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says the camp experience taught him that those who would/could survive might have as their creed the statement by Nietsche:  If you have a "why," you can bear almost any "how."  He further learned that the men who had no purpose soon gave up & died, and many died between Christmas and New Years.

NOTE:  This is remarkable to me, since they were Jews, and they attached such a significance to Christmas; however, it is likely the men associated holidays & family & happy times with Christmas, no matter their heritage.

Frankl states that the men (and all people) necessarily need to learn to ask not "what do I expect from this life?" but rather "What does this life expect of me?"  And then he gives the answer to the 2nd question, and in so doing states the ultimate message of his book:

Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems (i.e., to LIFE'S         problems) and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual.
