READING, WRITING
RUMI
Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says that today, compared to 200 + years ago, people do not die at the hand of fellow Sapiens (individuals or states) NEARLY as frequently. Even under dictatorships, the killing rate is much lower.
Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls getting into the regular swing of things in running a government that stretched ACROSS the globe
NOTE: I'm finally resigned to using the expression "across the globe" when in earlier times, I thought that "across" could only be used for a relatively flat surface.
... BO met regularly with his teams, but was advised by some that he could count on at least someone, somewhere screwing up. His job was to minimize the screw-ups.
NOTE: I'm impressed that running the USA is similar to running a business with a team of employees.
Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says that "harm" and "fairness" comprise the basics of moral considerations, but that the moral matrices coexist with others in other cultures, along with internal matrices. He adds that WEIRD communities/demographics are challenged by other moral matrices outside their own; they find it difficult to accept that other matrices might be just as valid as their own. WEIRD: Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich, Democratic.
Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He says that a phenomenon of the 20th C is EXISTENTIAL VACUUM. It manifests in people having a major increase in free time, and as a result becoming BORED (as opposed to distressed) with their lives. Automation is partially to blame. Frankl also addresses the change that early man underwent when he gave up his animal survival & security characteristics, and began to make decisions.
Frankl notes that in a study, young people exhibited the "existential vacuum" a lot more, and Europeans MUCH more than Americans. (I wonder why that is - I noted that Austrians in the 1960s were MUCH more work-oriented, and tended to accept their lot in life much more readily than did I and my American friends did.)
Frankl also differentiates between "conformism" and "totalitarianism" - conformism is doing what others are already doing, and totalitarianism is doing what others wish you to do.
