READING, WRITING

Read 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says James Cook's expedition in 1768-1771 to the Pacific resulted in following the orbit of Venus, but ALSO led to the awareness of the biological need for citrus foods (Vitamin C) to conquer scurvy.  I'm guessing that Harari will now address the "marriage" of Empire and Science, and how that played such a huge role in our societal evolution at (or soon after) the beginning of Enlightenment.

Read 70 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls dealing with the transition to White House living, especially for Michelle, who became isolated & lonely.  She asked her mother to come live with them at the WH - BO was surprised but understood Michelle's need for her mother.

Read 70 seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee.  He says, again, that the SIRR is the essence of the new and current movement of uniting all our paths into one great love.  This is what the Friends of God, the Lovers of God, are doing in a new way (Vaughan-Lee does not specifically state what that new way IS; rather, he seeks to restate the idea that it''s new, and from God, in yet another way).
He then describes how the "inner" and "outer" are being woven together, so that the SIRR can become a visible pattern which we all can partake of.

Read 70 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says, to introduce Section Three, and the first chapter of it (Elephants Rule), that he discovered he is a routine liar.  (This caught my attention since I have battled my own tendency to lie (hiding my gay life), which manifests in seemingly harmless statements/thoughts that I know are just plain NOT TRUE.  I catch myself almost daily, correcting the inaccurate statements and verbally punishing myself for lying to myself.)

Haidt lied to his wife to get out of a difficult situation.  He then recalls his student's hypnosis experiments in which subjects were hypnotize to react with disgust when reading certain words; they proved that moral judgments were the results of emotions, not reasoning.

Read 70 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He recalls the misery suffered by him and his fellow prisoners wrt eating the meager rations they were given by the Nazis:  some at it immediately, and others rationed the ration, eating only half (eg) at one time, and saving the rest for later.

I'm guessing that Frankl will apply this 2nd approach to living in general:  we're better off rationing the good things we have, rather than consuming them all at once.  We'll see.

**********

Well, amazingly, I lay in bed at 6am today, and listened to 20 minutes of the news before I began my routine.  I had considered taking a "day off" from my routine.  But, without really thinking things through, I just began to do my routine.  It's a habit, and I "gave in" to it.  I did it all (except the inversion table), and I still have 5 minutes to spare before I need to get up & dressed, etc.

It's a testament to regular repetition of good things, and to my Father who taught me that when I was a teenager.  "Even if it's just polishing your shoes,"  he said, "do it regularly."
