READING, WRITING

Read for 1+ pages in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the center of power & culture shifted between 1500 and 1750, from Asia to Europe.  Asia's (mostly China's) huge majority in these areas dwindled to only 5% by 1700, and Europe began to dominate in almost every aspect of human existence, even though Asians resent(ed) this "takeover."

Harari asks, "Why Europe?"

Read for 1+ pages in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls, "how could my heart not be stirred?" when he saw the US population largely support him as their new young President.  My eyes are watering at the thought that much of this has been damaged by DJT, who did not care even a micro-bit for any of these things, let alone democracy and freedom.  My heart is weeping along with my eyes right now.  I plead with whatever supernatural powerful being who might be listening, "Please don't let this go away; we need to keep it for our children & grandchildren....."  If there is a purpose to prayer, let it shine right now for America and for all freedom-loving nations of the Earth/World.

Read for 1+ pages in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee.  He says music and magic will bring forth the greatness of God; we will still have negative, individual challenges, but the majesty & greatness of God will far outshine them.  Music & magic.

Read for 1+ pages in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says scientists & researchers are warming to the idea that intuition is in charge of our behavior (more than reasoning); Zajonc (?) did experiments in the 1980s in which he showed that people begin liking things merely because they've been shown them several times (i.e., advertising works? ( - but not for me!)).  Til then, psychologists generally held that people initially and principally used reason to determine what they thing/believe/feel.

Haidt doesn't think so.

Read for 1+ pages in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He remembers his prisoners in Dachau would actually have discussions about politics, almost all day long.  Some would figure out a way to pray.  Typhus hit the camp, and the weaker men succummed to it; others, including Frankl tried to stay awake all night to avoid it and the delirium that usually accompanied it.  There was no/little medical attention given to prisoners.

I'm impressed by the tenacity to life they showed.  While some gave up and died, many didn't want to die, and were constantly finding ways to survive this awful hell.  I'm not  able, it seems, to imagine what "life" was like for them, and I'm horrified that Jews I know today might have also suffered so, had they lived then.  Further, I'm horrified that German Nazis were able to treat human beings in such a manner as these people endured.  All the while, I imagine, the Jews asked themselves, "Why me?"  and "What did I do to deserve this?"

I'm overcome with grief for them, and would be devastated if any such people wield that hellish power over any fellow human beings today.

Read for 1+ pages in ULYSSES by James Joyce.___
