READING, WRITING

Read for 70 sec in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He continues to address the question of why the UK (followed by all of Europe and the USA) developed technologically (1800s, 1900s) at a relatively fast clip, while Asia and the Middle East were MUCH slower.  The striking example is the railroad:  China had one installed, but by the next year, they destroyed it.

Harari says they did not keep up with Western countries because the Eastern civilizations were "different" in their organization of their society.

Read for 70 sec in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls attending a church service the day before his inauguration, where the preacher compared BO to the Biblical Shadrack, Mechak and Abednego, who were thrown into flames by King Nebuchadnezzar because they would not kneel down and worship him.  The preacher told BO (and the congregation) that BO would soon be "thrown into the flames" that accompany being President, and that IF HE WOULD REMAIN FAITHFUL, he would be protected.  His thoughts drifted to the "football" (a leather container) that was always with him as President; the football contains the Nuclear Codes that a President COULD use to "blow up the world."

magic is immanent to our existence.  It is feminine, and is the reason so much energy becomes evident in our existence.  Through magic, the world can heal itself and come alive again.

The priests of monotheism banned magic because it focuses on the manifestation of the divine, and they focused only on the transcendence of God.

(transcendent, transcendence:  quality of being able to go beyond normal limits or boundaries.  E.g., Talking to God.)

Without magic, life is merely existence.  WITH magic, myriads of blossoms bloom with potential as we link the inner and outer worlds.

Hollywood and others seek to make magic an industry, not a celebration.

Read for 70 sec in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says (pp 67-68) the implicit affect test (or implicit association test) can be taken on line at projectimplicit.org.  It might be disturbing because it will (or can) indicate racism.  I want to try it sometime soon.

The intuitive affects that occur within 200-250 milliseonds might slow down some affects when the subject is shown a particular race, and is asked to associate it with some good (or bad) words.

We'll see when I try it.

Read for 70 sec in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He recalls how those who had perhaps less physical strength but more INNER strength and spirituality, were able to survive the camp, or at least, survive it longer than others.  Frankl describes the ritual of falling into formation in the dark cold mornings, and responding to shouted orders; if someone failed to follow the orders exactly, they were kicked or hit with the butt of a rifle.  In this condition, Frankl's fellow prisoner whispered to him, "If our wives could see us now, I wonder what they'd think."  and "I hope their camps are not as awful as these."

Frankl is commenting on the observation he made that "inner awareness" often was the means by which weaker men were able to survive better.
