READING, WRITING
Read for 80 seconds in HOW TO BIOHACK YOUR BRAIN by Kristen M. She says there are 7 common conditions that CAN affect the brain:
- ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE. 5.8 million Americans have it; 1/10 in people over 65; cause believed to be abnormal deposits - "amyloid plaque" - along with tangled bundles of fibers called "tau." Signs of AD show up decades before symptoms: memory loss, difficulty understanding & completing familiar tasks, decreased judgment, among other problems.
- PARKINSON'S DISEASE. 2nd most common neurodegenerative disease in US; 1.5 million affected; symptoms: muscle rigidity, tremors, overall difficulty moving, posture, handwriting, speech; cause still unknown (but head trauma, exposure to chemicals might play roles)
- DEMENTIA. Not a disease, but a term used to describe a broad condition marked by a significant decline in cognitive function. 1/6 women & 1/10 men over age 55 develop some form of dementia.
- CONCUSSION ("MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY"). Defined as a blow to the head, but no loss of consciousness for more than 30 minutes, resulting in a mild traumatic brain injury. (If loss of consciousness lasts for 30+ minutes, it's called a traumatic brain injury). 2-4 million concussions occur annually. Symptoms: memory loss, fatigue, headache, visual impairment, mood changes.
- ANXIETY. Most common mental ailment, affects 40+ million in US over 18; researchers say it originates in the brain with over-stimulation of certain neural pathways, and of the amygdala. Symptoms can be: feeling worried, nervous, restless, unease, fatigue, irritability, muscle tension, sleep problems.
- DEPRESSION. Caused by problems in brain biology. MILLIONS of chemical reactions in the brain happen; depression is not caused by chemistry alone. Changes in HIPPOCAMPUS can contribute to depression. Other factors: genes, work, sleep patterns, prescription drugs. Estimate: 8% of US population is depressed within given 2-week periods.
- STROKE
