Tried to silence my brain for 70 seconds. At least I focused on counting to get to 70 seconds.

READING, WRITING
Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He continues his discussion about societal evolution by describing the conflicts that existed in Medieval Europe, where bold brave knights would battle heathens with a sword, and with one stroke, demonstrate their devotion to both religion and chivalry.
I am now "inserting" my own history education, way back in the 9th Grade at the American International School, where I remember learning about the Crusades. I think I even wrote something in a paper or a test, and I quoted that the Crusaders (knights? warriors? mercenaries?) believed that "the sword is the key to heaven."
I'm amazed that I'm now "connecting" what I learned years ago with what I'm reading today in SAPIENS. Rather, I might just be marveling that I actually learned something back then, and that it stayed with me. I'm guessing that there are other lessons I'll recall as I review this book.
But for today, I sit all amazed.
Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins. He says "Don't be the sacrifice. MAKE it." He was quoting a friend. Hemingway and others subjected themselves to the violence of their art, in stead of conquering it. Ernie ended up ending it all early in his life.
Goins says there is another way: Don't suffer. WORK. And I like that.
Show up for work every day.
**********
Today's my mom & dad's anniversary, married in 1930, so their 90th. I can remember back in 1980, celebrating their 50th in Salt Lake City - it was quite an event. Mom looked radiant in her peach gown, and Dad was smart and stylish in his new grey suit. It's hard to believe this was 40 years ago, when Joseph Keith was only 2 years old, and Lisa Marie was still waiting on a heavenly cloud. Memories.
I was sort of surprised that they reached their 50th, since Dad was not too healthy, being still a bit overweight in spite of having had stomach surgery. He would only live 2 1/2 more years.
I had a really nice talk with George last night. He and I connect on many levels. When we don't talk, I really miss him. And it's so painful to think of him suffering in the heat of Nicosia's summer.
