READING, WRITING

Read 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He explores the idea of "global unity," which, he says, is definitely not characteristic of any animal species (e.g., no alpha Lion aspires to be king of all lion kings).  Until the Cognitive Revolution (_______), neither did Sapiens.  And in the earlier days, Sapiens might have united/conquered those nearby, but they did not perceive of uniting the entire planet.  Egyptians always knew that there were barbarians outside their borders.

I'm intrigued by the notion that during this process (Harari says), Sapiens had the notion that there was an "us" and a "them."  We still abide by this concept today.

But I have often allowed myself to settle on the concept of "I" and "them."  IOW, there has to be, on some level, an understanding that I am me, and everyone else is not me (or "them").  Well, of course.  But maybe the concept of self is erroneous, if we "broke off" from God before, and now we're individuals, and eventually we're going to return to God to again become part of Him/Her/It.

Who knows, really.  But it's interesting to think of global unity in that context.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says that ARTISTS see beauty in the ordinary, and have a passion for sharing it with others.  I don't really identify with these feelings, and so I'm not likely to be an artist who shares messages with others.

He then moves to PROFESSOR, a person who longs to learn, and learns more than most.  S/he is also good at expressing ideas, whether speaking or writing.  This might be closer to who I am, although I have NOT, over my life, become obsessed with learning in general.  I HAVE been able to select one theme/idea/subject and research it to a fine point.  For example, when I have a condition (physical), I want to know what's really happening with my body, and so I do internet research, and consult with people I know are experts.  Same with history of SOME things (e.g., Mormonism).  But many things (e.g. classical music) I stay "outside" of the field, listen occasionally, and think now and then that I might organize the Great Composers on paper, according to location, life span, associates, themes, style, etc.  I know doing that would require a bunch of time and effort, and I usually conclude that it's not really what I want to do.  So I leave it alone, and enjoy some of the music, and go back to whatever I was doing.

So, Jeff Goins says we have 5 platforms:
  1. THE JOURNALIST
  2. THE PROPHET
  3. THE ARTIST
  4. THE PROFESSOR
  5. THE CELEBRITY
Already I'm not seeing myself as absolutely one of them.  But I'll defer judgment until I've absorbed the full spectrum of platforms Goins proposes.

**********

Today, I'm beginning my 2-day drive from LA to SLC, and it's still a bit early.  But I'm going to
  • complete my routine
  • shower
  • have breakfast
  • get on the road!
Ainsi soit-il.
