Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the Industrial Revolution brought with it many changes that led to changes in the lives of Sapiens, notably the establishment of standard time zones, and schedules.  It all started with the trains in the UK in the 1820s-30s.
