READING, WRITING
RUMI
Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He made me laugh by writing about time and how it controls our lives. LOL sentence: "Today, a single affluent family generally has more time pieces at home than an entire medieval country."
In spite of Harari seeking to bring his book from the Big Bang all the way to modern times, he has necessarily missed the utmost, modern technology of today (2024): he says I can tell time by "glancing at my Android," among others.
Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls how the GOP press began to openly criticize BO's teams' efforts to get the nation out of the financial crisis of 2008/09. BO asked questions about the unfairness of a government bailout when it came to a family who bought too much house for their budget, compared to the fairness of the government helping someone who'd lost their job and was facing foreclosure. A right-leaning journalist, Rick Santelli, ranted publicly about this and more.
Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says that people in the USA are different from people in India: Indians are focused on bathing and what/who they might touch. Americans less so. He recalls that in grad school, he teamed up with others to analyze why we react with disgust when confronted with dirt, for example, but not so much disgust when confronted with robbing banks or cheating on taxes.
Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He recalls observing the reactions of the released prisoners to their freedom: bitterness (I.e., wanting to seek revenge for the wrongs perpetrated against them), and disillusionment (I.e., realizing that suffering did not completely end up on their release).
