READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that conquering (all?) empires believed that they had a mission to assist their conquered people to improve their standards of living.  Sometimes included were worship of kings, the Mandate of Heaven, etc.  Here's his list of empires and how they improved their conquerees:

  1. China's ruling class, the Emperor --- the benefits of culture, education --- foreign subjects.
  2. Romans --- peace, justice, refinement, law, domestication, public bathhouses, philosophy --- the barbarians, wild Germans, painted Gauls.
  3. Mauryan Empire --- Buddha's teachings --- ignorant world.
  4. Muslim caliphs --- divine mandate to spread The Prophet's revelation --- to all, whether peacefully or by the sword.
  5. Spanish & Portuguese Empires --- the true faith (i.e., Catholicism) --- converts in the Indies and America.
  6. British Empire --- liberalism, free trade --- to all their conquered countries, on whom, collectively, the sun never set.
  7. Soviets --- facilitate the march from capitalism to utopian dictatorship of the proletariat --- the entire world.
  8. Americans --- democracy, human rights --- the Third World, even if by cruise missiles & F-16s.
Wow.

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says I need to make friends.  Don't buy into the idea that writers are loners and introverts.  Offer help to others, ask for less, follow up.  Give more than I take; ask more than I tell.  Make friends.  Dennis Kelsch comes to mind.  I'll start with him.  Maybe give him some ideas for "Dad's Primal Scream."

Read for 1 page in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls coming to an understanding of how his grandmother's life had influenced his and his sister's lives; she worked hard at a bank which helped her and her husband retire comfortably, and allowed her daughter (BO's mom) to pass on the resources to send her 2 children, Barack and Maya, to fancy colleges.

Read for 70 seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee.  He says that the Friends of God cannot do the work that needs to be done by themselves; they need the help of people who are spiritually evolved to this work.  The first step is the process of purification.

Read in THE PERSIAN BOY by Mary Renault for fun, for 1+pages.

Read for a while in C, ST & H by John Boswell.  He says the "dark ages/medieval Europe/the Middle Ages" were not completely painted with intolerance.  I anticipate that his book seeks to explore and prove this assessment correct.

Read for a bit in ILLUSIONS by Richard Bach.  He says to use the blue feather experience to manifest what you want.  Focus on it, forget it, manifest it, photograph it.  I did the first step this morning for 3 minutes.  Now the task is to "forget it" until it appears.
