READING, WRITING
Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He imagines there might have been an Iberian just after the Roman occupation, who was a successful cattle merchant; his wife still likes baubley Celtic jewelry, and he wishes she'd adopt the Roman style jewelry (simpler, cleaner); he laments that he'll never be "admitted" into Roman business/political realms, in spite of his Roman-style villa he built.
Harari is probably going a bit far in his speculation, but I can accept that there was, in fact, a difficult period of (difficult, or impossible) assimilation in every conquering of lesser countries by stronger empires. This challenge might have been conquered by the passage of a generation or two.
Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins. He says I should reach out to someone on FB or TWITTER, or somewhere, and offer to interview them over coffee. Then write up the interview, and publish it. This is scary (NO DUH!), but worth the risk.
I thought of Dennis Kelsch (Dad's Primal Scream), Mark Ziegler (swimming late in life). This might be facilitated by the end of the COVID19 pandemic, the ability to get into my car and drive to ______ and do the interview in person. Of course, I could also do it over the phone, or using ZOOM. I could even interview GEORGE (fibromyalgia), or MARIE (photography), or DAVID (foundation).
This is kinda exciting!
Read for 1+ page in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls how many in his Black family/friend entourage (?) had serious doubts about his aspirations; his friend Marty's mom expressed doubts about her son's career decisions, and had even MORE doubts about Obama's. But Barack and Marty went ahead and took the risks.
My impressions of BO & Michelle are that they are following a path they are creating as they go. They are a good balance of passion and reason. They were matched very well as a couple. Both straight. Both Black. Both high achievers. Both loving. Both family oriented. Both blessed with the ability to see both the big picture and the small but meaningful details. Both willing to take risks.
We elected BOTH to the Presidency, I'd say. Necessarily, that's true of every president and his partner. But I can see in the Obamas a balance of yin-yang between them that works better than most other presidential couples I've known in my lifetime. We'd do well to learn lessons from the Obamas.
I wish I could interview them. I doubt I ever will, but I dare to entertain the notion.
Read for 70 seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee. He says that we are given THE GIFT OF WHOLENESS. We are constantly yearning to become something else than who are are today, and this is in error. Rather, we are to recognize that WHOLENESS has always been, and we are to accept that we are already WHOLE. We should in essence "give up" the idea that we will become something else (or better) at some later date. Rather, we absorb our own WHOLENESS NOW, and allow it to flourish TODAY.
I think that's what he's saying. I will re-read this passage tomorrow, and hope to have a better grasp of it's meaning. Maybe I can even observe throughout the day how I am already WHOLE.
Read for fun in THE PERSIAN BOY by Mary Renault.
