READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in HOW TO BIOHACK YOUR BRAIN by Kristin MyooMyay. She says there are 7 common conditions that CAN affect the brain:
  1. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.  5.8 million Americans have it; 1/10 in people over 65; cause believed to be abnormal deposits - "amyloid plaque" - along with tangled bundles of fibers called "tau."  Signs of AD show up decades before symptoms:  memory loss, difficulty understanding & completing familiar tasks, decreased judgment, among other problems.
  2. PARKINSON'S DISEASE.  2nd most common neurodegenerative disease in US; 1.5 million affected; symptoms:  muscle rigidity, tremors, overall difficulty moving, posture, handwriting, speech; cause still unknown (but head trauma, exposure to chemicals might play roles)
  3. DEMENTIA. Not a disease, but a term used to describe a broad condition marked by a significant decline in cognitive function. 1/6 women & 1/10 men over age 55 develop some form of dementia.
  4. CONCUSSION ("MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY)
  5. ANXIETY
  6. DEPRESSION
  7. STROKE

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls his first flights on AF1 (there are 2 such planes), and the trans-Atlantic flight on his first visit to Europe. In 2008-09, he assessed the decor as "80s" but was quite pleased with all the detail gone to in the service of the POTUS. Some receiving countries complained at how "big a deal" a visit by the US President in AF1 was. But they always relented, since, as BO says, it WAS (IS) a big deal.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says that some of his research associates and other colleagues (5 in all) met at the annual convention of social psychologists in 2006, and discussed how they could help conservatives embrace all 5 moral foundations, and not just the ones that suited them. Haidt & the group of liberals were critical of convention speakers who joked about the GOP politicians (W Bush) who demonstrated lower cognition skills.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. Winslade (in the Afterword) says Frankl's book was "formulated" in his mind well before he found himself in the concentration camps. He describes Frankl's philosophy about the meaning of one's life in the word "Logotherapy" which Frankl developed and preached all his life. He turned down the opportunity of leaving Austria because he wanted to care for his parents. But that decision resulted in being arrested & sent to the camps. There, he deepened his resolve to find meaning in his own life, and to find creative ways of dealing with the deprivations he endured. In sum, Frankl's philosophy is that if a person finds meaning in his/her life, he/she will be happier & be equipped to meet the challenges of this life.
