Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says before the Industrial Revolution, families/communities/kings did little more than protect people from threatening neighbors.  But POST-IR, societies communicated and educated better, and the entities "market" and "state" developed, and SAPIENS, however unwittingly, began to deal with these entities.  The market provided economic opportunity, and the state provided for common needs and protections.

NOTE:  the family unit has survived all of these changes, until possibly now, when many seek to re-define family.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls that the battles he was waging had to do with the middle class being squeezed into a smaller force by the GOP et al, who wanted to win elections (and power) by generating RESENTMENT rather than equality/democracy.  The GOP leaders understood this and acted accordingly.  BO states:

    "The forces they (I.e., the GOP et all) represented might have lost the recent battle at the polls --- but the larger war, that clash of worldviews, values, and narratives, was the one they would still try to win."

NOTE:  after 4 years of the orange monster, followed by 3+ years of sanity under Biden, this war is still being fought.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He analyzes the contrast between "the ethnic of divinity" and "the ethnic of autonomy."  The first is the focus on religion, and all its trappings which "make" people do and believe certain things.  The second is focused on individual freedom to think of and follow our own set of beliefs.  Allowing both allows us to think highly or lowly of others' actions & beliefs; including extremely shallow people and extremely deep people.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says polls and studies show that the vast majority of humans need a " meaning to will" in their lives.  They cannot be satisfied with the purpose of their lives being merely to defend their defense mechanisms.  Most people have a deep-seated and intense motivation to defend and even to die for a cause and/or a loved one.

NOTE:  Frankl's use of "will to meaning" is unclear.
