READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He says, in describing post-WWII global affairs, the US held the dominant position, mostly because the rest of the world was impoverished, and we were not; but also because we were to some degree self-serving, and sought to ensure that our interests were preserved.  We meddled in other countries' affairs, sometimes to a disastrous end.  But we also bound ourselves to created international laws and norms..... 


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He asks, "What makes people vote Republican" and answers the question in an essay with that title, published in EDGE (John Brockman):  the usual reasons given are a) an overly strict upbringing, and b) the people (GOP) are inordinately afraid of change.  He introduced his 5-FOUNDATIONS on morality theory.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says "things determine each other, but man is SELF-determining."  He also wondered if a person, met with tragedy, could read a book which could change is life (e.g., double amputee soldier read this book, and it changed his attitude away from suicide.)
