READING, WRITING

Read for 70 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says that the Arab-Muslim Empire which began circa. 650 AD, was hugely successful in that the conquered lands and their people (Egypt, Syria, Iran) sought eagerly to become part of the Arab Empire; eventually they were considered Arabs.  Increasingly, the Arab Elite (i.e., the originals of the Arab Empire) became dominated by the conquered lands/people, especially the Iranians; but all were melded into "Arabs."

Read for 70 seconds in YOU ARE A WRITER by Jeff Goins.  He says, in still other words and ways, that becoming a successful writer takes work, and that it's not "glamorous" to write a book; rather, "grisley."

So he asks me to ask my self these questions:
  1. Am I ready to work hard?
  2. Even when I'm discouraged?
  3. Even when I don't feel like it?
  4. Will I write every day, no matter what?
  5. Will I persevere even if the way seems blocked?
He says I'm not a good writer (he's right) ..  yet.  No one is a good writer right away.  I have not mastered writing techniques enought - yet.  I have not developed my own style - yet.  So, I'm safely grouped with thousands of other people who are also not good writers -yet.

Goins' implication (he'll likely state it again clearly) is that I CAN become a good writer..... IF I'm willing to do the work.

Read for 1+ pages in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He recalls formulating his campaign, which was based on the idea that he would "ask Blacks" to accept the "psychic burden" of swallowing their frustration and anger in favor of some "far-off ideal."  My immediate response was to ask, similarly, if it was "a lot to ask" of Brown people, Asians, and White people, to adopt a similar position in the face of some obstacle....... I have not thought this through completely.  But I lean toward fairness.  And white people were decidedly UNFAIR to their fellow human beings who were Black.  Same for Asians.  And within the white culture, some whites were unfair to other whites.  I'd guess that some Asians were also.  But the glaring tragedy of anti-Black racism in the US, for hundreds of years, overshadows any such consideration.  And reparations are, IMO, in order.

I'm reminded of the Black neighborhood in Tulsa, OK, that was flattened by fearful white killers, 100 years ago.  There are 3 survivors who tell us of the horror of that day.  I'm so very saddened, so very ashamed, and so very embarrassed by some of the people of my white race.  I do hope that the majority of white people will soon come around to treating all people (and animals) with dignity and respect.

Read for 70 seconds in WORKING WITH ONENESS by Llewelyn Vaughan-Lee.  He says that we must not cloud our global consciousness by personal greed; rather we should use it (i.e., global consciousness) to further the work.

Read for 1+ pages in THE PERSIAN BOY by Mary Renault.
