READING, WRITING

CATCH-UP from yesterday:

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says that there is an "Authority/subversion Foundation" which is reflected in how we treat each other:  Kids don't say "f you" to their parents; doctors are usually referred to as "Doctor Smith;"  English uses "you" for everyone, but generally reserves using a first name for familiar people; French & German, etc al, have 2 forms (Vous, tu).

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says (he's almost done with this book), and it bears repeating here, typing it, internalizing it:

PSYCHIATRY REHUMANIZED

"For too long a time - for half a century, in fact - psychiatry tried to interpret the human mind merely as a mechanism, and consequently the therapy of mental disease merely in terms of a technique.  I believe that this dream has been dreamt out.  What now begins to loom on the horizon are not the sketches of a psychologized medicine but rather those of a humanized psychiatry.

"A doctor, however, who would still interpret his own                                                                                     role as mainly that of a technician would confess that he sees in his patient nothing more than a machine, instead of seeing the human being behind the disease!

"A human being is not one thing among others; things determine each other, but man is ultimately self-determining.  What he becomes - within the limits of endowment and environment - he has made out of himself.  In the concentration camps, for example, in this living laboratory and on this testing ground, we watched and witnessed some of our comrades behave like swine while others behaved like saints.  Man has both potentialities within himself; which one is actualized depends on decisions and not on conditions.

NOW FOR TODAY:

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari.  He says scientists today are moving toward creating a "human" brain in a computer.  He asks questions such as "Is this a human being?" and "If deleted, would it be murder?"  As time goes on, we'll at least find out if such is a real possibility.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama.  He begins at this point in his book to introduce the ideals of America, how they're subject to terrorism (9-11), and how they're appreciated by less-fortunate peoples (USAID).

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt.  He says not to confuse POWER and AUTHORITY.  I need to re-read this passage iot understand it better.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl.  He says (in the postscript written in 1984)  that there is a "tragic triad" (1) pain, 2) guilt, and 3) death), in spite of which he advocates "the case for tragic optimism."  This, he says, involves 1)  getting something positive from experiencing pain, 2) letting go of guilt as we derive from it a way to live better, and 3) not dying but living and being responsible for our decisions in life.
