READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He discusses the potential developments of Sapiens (v. Neandertals) and future beings; it's all too open-ended to define in writing; there was nothing of what we know today at the point of "Singularity" so it's not meaningful to say "before the Singularity (or Big Bang)." Beings today v. Neanderthals, similar to Beings today v. future beings. Qui sait? Pas moi!


Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He says that protocol was important in his interactions with the "old" and "new" guards. He worked on his salute, while also encouraging the younger set to develop their new ideas. Daily he received a Presidential Daily Brief (a leather binder with 10-15 pages of new news important for the prez to know. Almost always included mentions of potential terrorism around the world.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says The Authority foundation looks at heirarchy in both directions (up, down), and liberals/democrats have an easier time bucking the system than do conservatives/republicans, who tend to toe the line.


Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He says happiness follows the discovery of a meaning for one's life; if you don't have a meaning, you are unhappy, and sometimes that can lead to death (e.g., prisoners in concentration camps who gave up & died). Today, young people who have no meaning to their lives turn to drugs (and possibly to death). It seems that of the people who seek therapy, about 30% state they have no meaning to their lives (true in Palo Alto, true in Vienna).
