READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says, as we approach 2050, some scientists have already predicted that we will be enabled to solve our aging problem; we'll have begun the "Gilgamesh Project" (i.e., the "live forever project). If we do, we'll begin the demise of Sapiens and the rise of a new species of beings, and we can't know for sure what we'll be like then. Harari marries the notions of "Frankenstein" (i.e., creating a more perfect human) and "Gilgamesh" (i.e., solving the death challenge).

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He discusses his strategies in ending the 2 wars in Iraq and Afghanistan..... he acknowledges that had become "his wars." He planned to end the Iraq war in 19 months.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says studies show (his whole book is about what studies show) that neoPHOBIC people (usually conservative) don't like change, don't try new foods, ideas, people, etc. while neoPHILIA-oriented people (usually liberal) look to change, new foots, new ideas, new friends, etc. The latter tend to be OMNIVORES, but as such, are subject to more infection from the new people and places they visit. So the former are generally healthier.
Perhaps there are some progressive spectra that can be loosely defined:
  • babies eat only mother's milk (or formula), and then later move to more complex foods
  • when families decide what to feed the children, if they are herbivores, they don't risk infections from eating other animals
  • if families are omnivores, they have greater risk of infections
  • as a missionary for the LDS church, I began as a "right-winger" and moved gradually toward the middle; other missionaries were quickly middle-wingers, or left-wingers. I was cautioned that my mission might very well become the pattern my whole life would follow.
  • my life pattern was, in general, "republican --> democrat" and "clean-cut --> natural look" and "I don't need to do that --> I'll at least try it to see if I like it" etc, etc.
  • __________ (there must be more)

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He says there are 3 aspects notable, especially among younger people: depression, aggression and addiction, all of which can lead to a sense of meaninglessness. (Frankl is constantly proving that psychology (and logotherapy) is not an exact science; if it were, his book would be much shorter). Meaninglessness feelings are human feelings, he says, and they do not always lead to thoughts of suicide; however, he points out that HAD the patient developed a sense of meaning for his/her life, s/he might very well NOT have attempted or committed suicide. Great!

WRITING: I'm noticing that I'm making more and real progress in piano, in learning retention & recall, in sorting my thoughts about what I'm reading, in being much more focused and much less distracted by other influences that occur when I read. I'm also better able, lately, to stick to my meal plans (nothing between meals), and to my exercise routine.
I'm at a loss to explain why, at 74 1/2, this is happening more and more, unless it's because I know my last station on this train ride of life, is closer.
BUT..... what if it's true that modern medicine and science are really going to solve the Gilgamesh Project (I.e., find the cure for aging) by 2050.... I could still be around by then. I feel pretty okay right now; but that, I know, could change at any moment. I'm just not focused on the possibility; I'm not counting on it; I'm not looking for it.

In fact, I'm doing things to "BIOHACK my brain" as the author I'm reading now has advised. Kristin Muelenhausenheimerschmidt, or something.

Time to talk to my Georgie.
