READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says we SAPIENS have little to be proud of as, over our 70,000 years of being us, we've assumed the title of the most powerful animal ever. We're the gods of the earth, yet we're dissatisfied and irresponsible. Sounds dangerous, says Harari, as he closes out his famous book.

NOTE: I began reading it several years ago, but purposely did not rush through it, often reading only 1 page at a time. Discussing the content with others (mostly with George) has enabled me to soak up the messages more, and hopefully for a longer time.

I agree with Harari in most cases, although how could I not, since he is an accomplished historian, and I am merely a reader. I'm glad I read it, and I'll keep it to refer to as time goes on.

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He says his goals of withdrawing from both Iraq and Afghanistan were very different from each other. Iraq went relatively smoothly and as expected, but Afghanistan was proving to be a very different process: the Afghanis were not showing preparedness nor capacity to overpower Al-Quaida.

Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says the SANCTITY (movement, or issue, or phenomenon, or foundation (Haidt's term)) is "off to a poor start" since it has largely failed to keep people from getting sick, or from being exposed to evil/undesirable forces (e.g., diseases from others, negative mental influences). But there is also the "SACRED" side to consider: a good portion of the pathways of history shows people following sacred influences.

Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He further explores the deeper aspects of depression, suicidal ideation, and the presence (or absence) of a sense of meaning for one's life. He oversaw the psychiatric wing of the largest hospital in Vienna for several years; he notes that all the patients there who were unsuccessful in their suicide attempts, were happy they'd failed; and afterwards, they exhibited a stronger sense of meaning for their lives.
