READING, WRITING
Read for 80 seconds in SAPIENS by Yuval Noah Harari. He says our society today likes the "Frankenstein myth" in that we like creating monsters that we then destroy in order to preserve our superior status in our world; we might fantasize about traveling to Mars, etc, and so far, we haven't. But we still want "us" to survive and remain in control. Today's Dr. Frankensteins, however, might just be creating some superior "species" that have completely different ideas about what should be.
Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He describes his daily briefings with his military/security team, and how the less important issues always seemed to give way to the current military presence in Iraq & Afghanistan. For the first time, BO mentions Osama Bin Laden's name.
Note: In the same way that I do not comprehend how today's Republicans can give themselves over to a tyrant like Trump, I also do not comprehend how BO could give himself over to the idea that it's OK to kill a human being like Osama Bin Laden. I'd rather have had him incarcerated. In BO's place, I'd have to be superlatively sure that he was going to kill Americans, before I'd consider killing him. But then, I'm not the Prez, am I?
Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. he says ..... OMG, I was UNPREPARED for what he wrote next. In 2001, a German man killed and ate another man - with his consent - and was arrested. Haidt explores the ethic questions that arise, and asks, "Why do we care so much about what others do with their bodies?"
I immediately thought about the morality of abortion; I still don't have any comfortable resolution to it.
Read for 80 seconds in MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. He analyzes the ins & outs of mean, meaning, meaninglessness.... as they relate to unemployment. Again, he concludes that someone who has a purpose attaches to that purpose a meaning for his life. Even if he is not compensated. And with meaning comes inevitable happiness.
