READING, WRITING

Read for 80 seconds in A PROMISED LAND by Barack Obama. He recalls the Somali pirates incident in which Captain Phillips' life was saved by American snipers; they'd shot the pirates while Captain Phillips was their captive. BO laments that he gives order to kill our enemies, all the while wishing he could have drained the young pirates (some were younger than 19) of their hatred, and trained them in some useful skill.
MY NOTE: I suppose wanting this is one thing, but the reality of the world situation today is quite another. Still, I admire BO for his loyalty to what is good.


Read for 80 seconds in THE RIGHTEOUS MIND by Jonathan Haidt. He says, beginning PART III of the book, titled "Morality that Binds and Blinds," an apt metaphor would be, "We Are 90% Chimp and 10% Bee."
JH describes how he felt on 9/11/2001:  he wanted to display an American flag somehow; he ended up putting a decal in one corner of his rear windshield, and a UN decal in the other; this helped him respond to the overwhelming need to be AMERICAN, while still acknowledging that we are but one nation of the UN, and no better in many ways than any other.
